Kenton family launch appeal for meningitis toddler - Chronicle News ...

PLAYING happily with his twin brother, you would never guess the turmoil little Richard Hunter has been through.

Behind his bright smiles, the two-year-old hides a heartbreaking struggle after doctors were forced to amputate his legs, right arm and the fingertips of his left hand following his battle with meningococcal septicaemia, an extremely severe form of meningitis.

But the courageous youngster is not letting anything hold him back, and along with his brother Jayden, he is embracing life.

Mum Ashleigh Wilkinson and dad Richard Hunter said they could not be prouder of their boys.

?He is a great little boy and he is just always happy, nothing phases him. It hasn?t been difficult at all adjusting to having him home, he is such a good boy,? said Ashleigh, 20, of Kenton, Newcastle.

?The boys get on really well, Jayden will just do silly things to make Richard laugh at him.?

Richard was just 11-months when he contracted the meningitis virus in June 2010.

He was rushed to Newcastle General Hospital in the early hours of June 16 as the telltale meningitis rash began to spread over his body and his family were told to brace themselves for the worst.

The next 48 hours were critical for Richard, who had already been through an ordeal as he and twin brother Jayden were born three months premature and had been in and out of hospital with numerous chest infections.

But the brave youngster, who will celebrate his third birthday in July, pulled through everything under the watchful eyes of his family.

Just weeks after his brush with death Richard underwent procedures to amputate both legs, his right arm and the fingertips on his left hand.

Dad Richard, 24, said: ?At one point, doctors told us he had 24 hours to live.

?It was our worst nightmare, but it is amazing how far he has come, and to see his laughter and cheekiness. He is a little star, it is totally amazing.?
