XE.com - China Property Digest: Home prices rise for 2nd month

BEIJING, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Here is a look at the latest news, numbers and more from China's real estate market. Beijing has been working for more than two years to cool red-hot property prices but the campaign may now be adding to stress on the cooling economy and could offset the impact of any fresh policy easing.

Investment in the property sector accounted for 13.6 percent of China's gross domestic product in the first half of 2012.

REUTERS NEWS Aug 18 - China's home prices rose 0.1 percent in July from June, a second month of modest upticks that raises the risk Beijing may seek to bolster a two-year campaign to curb housing inflation, even though it is also weighing on the wider economy. Aug 17 - The California Public Employees' Retirement System will invest $530 million in two new real estate funds of ARA Asset Management that will mainly allocate to China, the biggest U.S. public pension fund said. Aug 16 - A former Morgan Stanley real estate dealmaker was sentenced to nine months in prison for skirting the bank's internal controls in an effort to enrich himself and a Chinese government official. Aug 10 - China Overseas Land & Investment expects more restrictions in China's property industry, chairman Kong Qingping said. Aug 9 - Chinese property sales rose in July, reinforcing signs of a recovery in the sector even as investment growth slowed to a three-month low due to continuing government curbs. Aug 8 - China Vanke, the country's largest home builder by sales, said it plans to develop its first overseas property as more Chinese buyers look abroad for investment opportunities, and that its first target would be the United States. Aug 6 - China Vanke Co Ltd reported a 25.1 percent rise in first-half net profits, but the housebuilder saw profit margins narrow as it cut prices to win business in the market slowdown. Aug 1 - The average home price in China's 100 major cities edged up in July for the second straight month, reinforcing signs of a recovery in the property market even as the government seeks to spur broader economic growth, a private sector survey showed.

DATA - China revised down this year's plan for residential land supply to 159,300 hectares, from a previous target of 172,600 hectares, according to data from the Ministry of Land and Resources. - China has invested 660 billion yuan in affordable homes in the first seven months, completing 3.6 million units and starting the construction of another 5.8 million, data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development showed. - China has per capita housing space of 36 square meters, according to a survey published by the Peking University. - The home transaction volume in Beijing was 29,089 suits in July, up 64 percent from a year earlier, its highest level since January 2011, according to data from property consultancy Centaline. - The average land prices for residential projects in China's 300 cities was 1,440 yuan ($230) per square metre in July, rising 28 percent from June but down 3 percent year-on-year, a survey from China Real Estate Index System (CREIS) showed.

CHINESE PRESS Aug 17- China's eight inspection teams, sent by the State Council to check on the implementation of property curbs, found the pressure of stabilizing housing prices in some cities was rising and reiterated local governments should strictly implement property purchases restrictions. (Xinhua News Agency) Aug 14 - China should launch real estate investment trusts (REITs) to help solve the capital shortage of building affordable housing for rent, said Jia Kang, head of the finance ministry's think-tank. (Financial News) Aug 9 - China will probably roll out new property tightening steps in August, which could either be a rise in transaction taxes of existing homes, the expansion of property tax beyond Shanghai and Chongqing, or finetuning of home pre-sale system, the newspaper cited some industry analysts as reporting. (China Securities Journal)

THEY SAID -- 'Although some trust funds invested in real estate projects may default, the possibility of them causing regional and systemic risk is small.' - Ke Kasheng, an official from the China Banking Regulatory Commission, was quoted as saying by Shanghai Securities News. -- 'China's property market will not make a turn in the coming months but it may stabilise in the first quarter of next year.' - Liu Xiaoguang, president of Beijing Capital Land, told a forum in Boao of the tropical Hainan island. Electrifying success in raising antioxidant levels in sweet potatoes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Already ranked by some as number one in nutrition among all vegetables, the traditional sweet potato can be nutritionally supercharged ? literally ? with a simple, inexpensive electric current treatment that increases its content of healthful polyphenols or antioxidants by 60 percent, scientists said at a conference in Philadelphia August 20.

Their report on the first electrical enhancement of sweet potatoes, a dietary staple since prehistoric times, was part of the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society. "Many people don't realize it, but sweet potatoes are one of the world's most important food crops," said Kazunori Hironaka, Ph.D., who led the research team.

More than 95 percent of the global sweet potato crop grows in developing countries, where it is the fifth-most important food, and malnutrition is a serious problem," he said. "Our discovery offers a way to further increase the sweet potato role in relieving hunger and improving nutrition and health."

Hironaka and colleagues at the University of the Ryukyus, Nishihara, Okinawa, Japan, previously discovered that passing an electric current through white potatoes increased the polyphenol levels by 60 percent. Polyphenols are a family of chemical compounds found naturally in fruits and vegetables that may help protect people from diseases and the effects of aging.

The electric current apparently stresses the potatoes, and they produce more polyphenols as a protective measure. The team suspected that the same effect would occur with sweet potatoes, but until now, nobody had tried.

In the new study, Hironaka and colleagues used the same approach, putting sweet potatoes into a salt solution that conducts electricity, and then passing various amounts of electric current through the water and the potatoes for 5 minutes. The best results came with 0.2 amps of current, which increased antioxidant activity in the potatoes by 1.4 times and total polyphenol content by 1.6 times compared to untreated potatoes. He noted that untreated sweet potatoes already are high in antioxidants, with 7 times more polyphenols than other potatoes.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest once ranked the baked sweet potato number one in nutrition of all vegetables. With a score of 184, the sweet potato outscored the next-highest vegetable (a baked white potato) by more than 100 points. Points were given for content of dietary fiber, naturally occurring sugars and complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium. Points were deducted for fat content (especially saturated fat), sodium, cholesterol, added refined sugars and caffeine.

Hironaka also noted that the electrical zapping seems to have no effect on the flavor, and that steaming is the best method of cooking to retain the most antioxidants. The electrical treatment method is inexpensive and simple enough to be used on small farms or in food distribution centers, he noted.

Obama: Ryan's tax plan means lower rates for Romney

By ALEX MARINO, MATTHEW LAROTONDA and DEVIN DWYER

WINDHAM, N.H. - President Obama today ratcheted up attacks on Mitt Romney over his personal tax rate, accusing the presumptive GOP nominee of choosing a running mate whose budget plan would reduce his tax burden to less than 1 percent each year.

"His new running mate, Congressman [Paul] Ryan, put forward a plan that would let Governor Romney pay less than 1 percent in taxes each year," Obama said on the stump in Windham, N.H.

"Here's the kicker: he expects you to pick up the tab. Governor Romney's tax plan would actually raise taxes on middle-class families with children by an average of $2,000. Not to reduce the deficit, or grow jobs, or invest in education ?but to give another tax cut to people like him," Obama said.

The charge is based on an analysis by Roll Call earlier this month of Ryan's "Roadmap for America's Future" 2010 budget, which would eliminate taxes on capital gains, dividends and interest - the primary sources of Romney's income. A separate study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, disputed by the Romney campaign, found the Republican's plan would raise rates on lower-income earners.

"Ask Governor Romney and his running mate when they're here in New Hampshire on Monday - they're going to be coming here on Monday - ask them if they think that's fair. Ask them how it'll grow the economy, or strengthen the middle-class. They have tried to sell us this trickle-down snake oil before. It didn't work then and it won't work now," he said.

The Romney-Ryan campaign says Obama distorts the facts with his charge. Romney has said he opposes eliminating the capital gains tax for upper-income earners; elimination of the capital gains tax was also not in Ryan's most recent budget proposal from 2012. (See an ABC fact-check of Obama's claims HERE.)

"Following news that 44 out of 50 states saw their unemployment rates rise, it is not surprising the President is launching yet another false attack," Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams said. "The fact is President Obama wants to raise taxes on private investment and job creators, which will lead to higher unemployment and fewer jobs. The Romney-Ryan Plan eliminates taxes for the middle class on interest, dividends and capital gains and implements pro-growth policies to deliver more jobs and more take-home pay for middle-class families."

The president also swiped at his rivals for their Medicare plan and pushed back against recent attacks that he has undermined the program.

"You think they'd avoid talking about Medicare, given the fact that both of them have proposed to voucherize the Medicare system," Obama said.

"That doesn't strengthen Medicare; that undoes the very guarantee of Medicare. That's the core of the plan reached by Congressman Ryan and endorsed by Governor Romney," the president said, echoing his remarks in Iowa earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Ryan was in Florida at the nation's largest retirement community, The Villages, to make the case before hundreds of seniors that Obama has already ended Medicare as it is known, cutting $700 billion in spending on the program to help pay for the Affordable Care Act. Ryan also accused Obama of not putting forward a plan to address the entitlement's long-term financial solvency.
