NYC woman dies after fall from 17th-floor balcony

A Manhattan ad executive who went out to smoke on the?balcony of her 17th-floor apartment while on a first date plunged to her death early Thursday morning when she sat on the railing and it gave way, according to police sources.

Sources told NBC 4 New York that?Jennifer Rosoff, 35, and her date were on the balcony at about 12:30 a.m. and when she sat on the railing's corner, it broke and she plunged to the ground, hitting scaffolding on the way down.

Her date told investigators he heard two pops before the railing gave way.

Witnesses reported seeing a screaming man, believed to be Rosoff's date, running from the building at 400 E. 57th St in Sutton Place.?Police spoke to him and cleared him of any wrongdoing.

A source on the scene provided a description of the railing, which appeared to be metal, and was bent and twisted, with a cigarette lighter still sitting nearby.

The Buildings Department is investigating.

Only the higher-floor corner apartments in the gray brick building have balconies, and the Buildings Department issued a partial vacate order for them Thursday.

A neighbor of Rosoff on the 17th floor, who did not want to give his name, told NBC 4 New York his landlord had sent the superintendent and an inspector to examine his balcony two or three months ago.

"They just asked to peek at it, and I just assumed they were only talking about the surface of it, because that's what they had worked on," he said.

The landlord, Stonehenge Management, LLC, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Rosoff, who had worked at The New Yorker and Lucky Magazine,?was director of sales at TripleLift, an advertising company on Fifth Avenue. CEO Eric Berry told NBC 4 New York the staff was struggling Thursday after learning of her death.

"She was a well-loved and highly respected member of our team," Berry said in a statement. "The entire company is distraught by the loss of Ms. Rosoff?? she will be deeply missed."

White House 'extremely disappointed' with Russia

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it's extremely disappointed in Russia's decision to grant asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Snowden isn't a whistleblower or a dissident. He says it's not a positive development for U.S.-Russia relations and says the move undermines Russia's record of law enforcement cooperation with the U.S.

Carney says the White House is re-evaluating whether a planned fall summit with President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin should still occur.

Snowden's lawyer says the onetime NSA contract systems analyst has left the transit zone of a Moscow airport and has officially entered Russia after authorities granted him asylum for a year. Snowden has thanked Russia for giving him asylum and criticized the Obama administration as showing "no respect" for the law.

Denzel Washington is returning to Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) ? Denzel Washington is returning to Broadway ? but he won't be singing.

Standing with his wife, Pauletta Pearson, on the red carpet Monday at the premiere his new movie, "2 Guns," the Oscar- and Tony-winning actor said he's set to appear in a revival of Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun."

"We start previews in March," he said.

Washington then explained his motivation for returning to the stage.

"I'm trying to keep up with my wife. My wife has been doing a lot more theater than me," he said as Pearson smiled.

Washington said they were heading to North Carolina for the National Black Theatre Festival, where Pearson is starring in the award-winning "Power Play."

"I'm looking forward to one day singing," Washington said playfully to Pearson's amusement. "See, I just wanted to get something out of her. She knows I can't sing. But she can sing."

As they walked away, the 58-year-old actor continued: "I can sing. I can sing ... in the shower."

Your Bladder May Fail

"One of the main issues that many women have to deal with almost immediately is incontinence," said Dr. Mary Rosser, an assistant professor in the department of obstetrics, gynecology and women's health at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. Pregnancy and childbirth can weaken the pelvic floor muscles and, in some cases, cause damage to the nerves controlling the bladder -- regardless of how you deliver. Kegel exercises (think tightening your pelvic muscles as if you were trying to hold in urine) can help. Rosser typically tells her patients they can start kegel-ing almost immediately after birth, with the caveat that it shouldn't hurt. if it does, hold off until everything's healed."

You'll Lose Your Hair

No, not because of the stress of those early sleepless nights, but because during pregnancy the hair cycle "arrests" in the growth phase, explained Dr. Staci Tanouye, an OBGYN with the Mayo Clinic. Many pregnant women report having the thickest, fullest hair of their lives for the same reason. After pregnancy, the cycle restarts, so "there can be quite a bit of hair loss," Tanouye said. Many moms will get back to their normal thickness after a couple of months; others may end up with thinner hair indefinitely. But, silver lining! According to Rosser, the excess hair that also sprouts up on women's faces and bodies during pregnancy (the result of increased androgen, the male hormone) also typically falls off after baby is born.

You'll Sweat More

When you're pregnant, your body produces and retains more fluid, and after your baby's born, that fluid needs somewhere to go. That's why, in the days and weeks after their babies are born, many women experience serious night-sweats, in addition to peeing a lot more frequently. It's something Rosser personally experienced when she had a baby. "I'd told women about it, but I was dumbfounded," the OBGYN laughed. "I would wake up in cold sweats to the point that I had to take a shower to get warm."

Your Vagina Will Be Bigger (And Maybe A Little Gassy)

Yes, after you have a baby, your vagina will change. And no, it probably won't ever fully return to its pre-birth shape. But in most cases, any vaginal widening will be relatively minor. "After several weeks, women will see that it regains some muscle tone," said Rosser. "It shouldn't be a big change in the long run." It's also possible, though less common, for women to begin experiencing what is, essentially, vaginal gas. Dr. Shieva Ghofrany, an OBGYN with Stamford Hospital, in Conn., said she's had otherwise healthy patients tell her they notice a gas coming from their vaginas after they have babies. "Somehow, with all the changes, gas can escape from the rectum and slides into the vagina, then sneaks out," she explained. It should stop within a few months, said Ghofrany, who generally tells women to give their bodies a full eight to 10 months before everything truly settles down.

You'll Lose A Cup Size

It's not uncommon for women to drop a full bra size after having a baby, and we're talking compared to their pre-pregnancy chests, not those glorious mid- and post-pregnancy breasts. "They get saggy, they get smaller and it happens more with each pregnancy," Rosser said, adding that studies show the changes have less to do with breastfeeding than with pregnancy itself, as well as factors like whether a woman is overweight or a smoker.

...And Your Breasts Could Leak For A Long Time

It's no surprise that breasts leak milk right after women have babies, but it is surprising for many women to discover that this can go on for years. Rosser's had women tell her their breasts began leaking a small amount up to two years after having their baby, typically triggered by hearing a friend or sister's newborn cry. Though it's usually harmless, Rosser does encourage women to go see a doctor to ensure that the discharge is normal.

You'll See Spots (In The Mirror)

Some women, particularly women with darker skin, develop melasma during pregnancy -- small patches of darker skin that look like freckles on their cheeks or foreheads -- explained Ghofrany. In some cases, the spots will fade, but many moms find that that melasma, often known as the "pregnancy mask," becomes permanent. If it's a concern, melasma can be treated with topical creams, Ghofrany said.

Your Feet Will Be Bigger

Immediately after your baby's birth, you may find that your feet and ankles swell, sometimes even more than they did when you were pregnant. Again, this has to do with all that fluid your body makes and retains during pregnancy, Rosser explained. It needs somewhere to go. Though that initial swelling should go away relatively quickly, many women find that the foot growth they experienced during pregnancy lasts for 6 months or beyond, and in some cases ... indefinitely. "Your feet can permanently go up by a size or two," said Ghofrany.

Your Overall Shape Will Change

"One of the things that many women don't realize is that even if they get back to their pre-pregnancy body weight, it'll be shaped differently," said Tanouye, who said that most of the changes will be in the "boobs, bottom and hips." Many women describe these hard-earned, motherly shape changes in the same way: "By the three month mark, I hear from a lot women that they're feeling better physically and better about their bodies -- and that they're feeling softer overall," she said. Berkus joins team for fantasy dog parks

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Interior designer Nate Berkus has been adding fantasy to homes for 16 years, inspiring people with just the right creative touch. But he's been a dog-lover even longer, and he's turning his design expertise to a half-million-dollar fantasy dog park.

Berkus, 41, has joined the creative team for the 2014 Beneful Dream Dog Park Contest. Contestants have to answer one question: "If you had $500,000 to create a Dream Dog Park where you and your best buddy can play together, what would you do?"

In Lancaster, Pa., the answer included a doggy amusement park with a tennis ball tree and a 40-foot roller coaster bridge. The park there ? the third contest winner ? opens Aug. 6.

The first park was built in Johns Creek, Ga., with a family destination theme and includes a bone-shaped bridge, two splash pads, tunnels, rubberized mulch paths and shade trees. The second park in Alabaster, Ala., has synthetic turf, agility rings, a walking trail, a fetch football field, fire hydrant goalposts and a mulch adventure path with tunnels, said Brent Gleckler, brand director for Beneful dog food.

"There is nothing I love more than being with my dog," Berkus said of sidekick Tucker, a black mutt. Together, they visit a dog park nearly every night.

The parks in Alabaster and Johns Creek have been tourist magnets. In Georgia, the city had to make 72 new parking spaces next to the park to accommodate visitors.

In Alabama, people take good care of the park, but the city does a walkthrough once a day, sprays it down twice a week and uses a biodegradable chemical once a month, city parks director Tim Hamm said.

The dog park is part the city's flagship Veteran's Park, with a ball field complex, 2.5-mile walking trail, eight pavilions with picnic tables, two playgrounds, a skateboard park and veteran's memorial, Hamm said.

Every day, they get calls from tourists asking about hours and directions.

"The more people that come to our city, the more people will stop, eat and buy gas. We are all for that. Out-of-town users are great," Hamm said. "Anybody who wants to come, we more than welcome them in town."

Beneful has some requirements ? large dogs must be separated from small dogs; the park has to be fenced for off-leash play; and it has to be a public or nonprofit park, open to the public at no charge.

"A park is a place for a community to come together. These parks are specifically designed for pet owners and their dogs, but everyone is welcome," Berkus said. "We're really looking at it from the dog's perspective. We will use smart materials that will last a long time, and make sure we factor in pet behaviors and create not only beautiful fun places but intelligently laid out places as well."

At Alabaster, the dog rules are typical of most dog parks: The off-leash area is for dogs, their handlers and those accompanying them, dogs have to be vaccinated, puppies and adult females in heat are banned and everyone has to clean up after their own dog.

Hamm said except for a few minor fights, there has been no trouble at the park. If there is a fight on your watch, the park has that covered too: A sign tells visitors "How to Break Up a Dog Fight."

Berkus, who has an upcoming NBC show called "American Dream Builders," is teaming up with contractor Jason Cameron, host of the DIY Network's "Man Caves," and Arden Moore, founder of fourleggedlife.com, for the latest contest.

So if Berkus were asked to design a $500,000 park for Tucker, what would he do?

"I would probably spend $495,000 bringing in squirrels because that's what Tucker likes. He's pretty simple. The sky is really the limit. It's an enormous budget and an enormous contribution to the communities where these parks are built and it really is meant to be a fantasyland."
