The stocks are probably going to do a "Marlin-out-of-the-water" last gasp jump in the next 24 hours, that seems to happen when I harp* on a topic.

Puts target two homebuilders at once

The homebuilder sector is seeing heavy put action today, and one trader may be playing one name off another.

Earlier today we reported some put buying in D.R. Horton on InsideOptions Pro , and since then our systems have detected action in two more homebuilders. A block of 11,901 KB Home May 9 puts sold for the bid price of $0.76. The volume was 3 times the previous open interest.

Shortly after, a block of 8,083 Lennar May 26 puts were bought for $1.11, above the ask price. This too was well above the existing open interest.

This institutional-size interest in homebuilder puts could be a coincidence--but, as frequent readers know well, I don't believe that there are any random coincidences in trading. So both trades could be part of a relative-value strategy, selling the puts in KBH to purchase the LEN contracts. (See our Education section)

Relative-value trades are very popular with hedge funds. The beauty of this type of play is that it can potentially profit regardless of overall market action.

Impact rookie Andrew Wenger juggles soccer, school

MONTREAL (AP) - Andrew Wenger played defender, midfielder and striker on his way to Major League Soccer.

And the juggling act has kept right on going since he was taken by the Montreal Impact with the top pick in January's SuperDraft - only now it's school and pro soccer he's trying to accommodate.

The 21-year-old from Lancaster, Pa., has been commuting between Montreal and Durham, N.C., going back to school at Duke on Saturday night or Sunday mornings and returning late Tuesdays to rejoin the MLS expansion team.

The Impact (0-3-1) played in New York on Saturday, losing 5-2 to the Red Bulls, and then flew directly to Utah for a game against Real Salt Lake (3-1-0) on Wednesday. After that, it's back to Montreal for a date Saturday with Toronto FC.

"Then I'll take a week or so just to finish school and then I'll be back with the team full time," said Wenger, who hopes to complete a history degree during the offseason.

"Obviously, it hasn't been ideal soccer-wise because I'm with the team a couple of days, then I have go back and kind of do my own thing and then come back again," he said. "But it's been nice in other ways that I've been able to gradually integrate myself into the team - the coaches have kind of let me take my time to get set."

In three years at Duke, Wenger started all 63 games. So far in the pros, he has come off the bench in three of Montreal's four games for a total of 65 minutes. But he understands his circumstances.

"Certainly. Especially going back and forth to school, I don't feel that I'm in any place to be looking at any more playing time than what I've really achieved so far," he said. "But over time that will change."

He is still learning the game at the MLS level.

"The game is just much quicker mentally," he said. "It's much more important to make the correct runs, be in tune with everyone else on the field - especially defensively, just being in the correct spot and forcing people the right way. There's much more of a mental aspect to the game than ever before."

That leaves little time to take in the scenery - like playing on the same field as Red Bulls star Thierry Henry - while on the job.

"That was pretty cool. Unfortunately, it wasn't as cool because he scored three goals against us," Wenger said.

He has good memories as well, like last month's home opener before 58,912 fans at Olympic Stadium.

"That was something special - something I never experienced before, playing in front of that many people," he said. "We have fantastic fans in Montreal."

Wenger arrived at Duke as a midfielder but was converted to defender for his first two years with the Blue Devils. He was switched to forward as a junior last year, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference with 17 goals and eight assists for 42 points.

He was the ACC rookie of the year in 2009, defensive player of the year in 2010 and offensive player of the year in 2011. He enjoys playing on the backline but says he relishes scoring goals and trying to figure out defenses.

The Impact have used him at forward so far, but Wenger says he could also play wide midfield or another position as needed.

"I'll be happy wherever I'm playing," he said.

The Impact also have former Italian international Bernardo Corradi, Gambian international Sanna Nyassi and American Justin Braun at forward, among others.

Wenger has been staying at a hotel in Montreal but is in the process of moving.

"It will be nice to finally have a place to live," he said. "And especially as the weather gets warmer, it just gets even more and more pretty."

Most expected the first pick in the SuperDraft to come down to Wenger, winner of the Hermann Trophy as the top NCCA soccer player, and Akron forward Darren Mattocks. The Impact used the first pick to take Wenger, leaving Mattocks for Vancouver.

Wenger said he was happy to go to Montreal since it was closer to his family.

"It's a great team, a fantastic organization," said Wenger, who grew up rooting for Manchester United. "I have no complaints whatsoever, thus far at least. I'm just excited."

Investigational Targeted Drug Induces Responses in Aggressive ...

Bethesda, Maryland--(ENEWSPF)--April 2, 2012. ?Preliminary results from clinical trials in a subtype of lymphoma show that for a number of patients whose disease was not cured by other treatments, the drug ibrutinib can provide significant anti-cancer responses with modest side effects.These results were presented as part of the opening plenary session at the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting 2012 on April 1 by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and colleagues.

Lymphomas are the fifth most common form of cancer. They are caused by an abnormal proliferation of white blood cells, can occur at any age, and are often marked by lymph nodes that are larger than normal, fever, and weight loss. Diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL), which were studied in this trial, are aggressive cancers that grow rapidly and represent 30 percent to 40 percent of newly diagnosed lymphomas. DLBCL originates from B cells, which play a crucial role in the body's immune response.

There have been no major advances in the treatment of DLBCL in more than a decade. However, important advances have been made in understanding that this disease is comprised of at least three molecular subtypes, each derived from B cells at unique stages in their development. The activated B-cell (ABC) subtype of DLBCL accounts for approximately 40 percent of cases and has the poorest clinical outcome with current therapy.

Recent genetic studies have revealed that chronic activity of receptors that sit on the surface of B cells play an important role in the progression of ABC lymphomas. In normal B cells, these B-cell receptors help the cells recognize infections. In malignant B cells of ABC lymphomas, these receptors provide crucial signals that promote tumor cell survival. Over one-fifth of ABC tumors have mutations that alter the activity of the B-cell receptor. Based on these findings, researchers looked for ways to target B-cell receptor signaling therapeutically. This research identified the enzyme Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) as a key element in the B-cell receptor pathway that is required to maintain the survival of ABC lymphoma cells.

?Our trial is a prime example of precision medicine,? said Louis Staudt, M.D., Ph.D., deputy chief, Metabolism Branch at NCI. ?A better understanding of the changes in cancer cells is leading us to what we hope will be more effective treatment strategies tailored to the genetic profile of each patient?s cancer.?

Based on this molecular research, investigators chose to use the drug ibrutinib (formerly PCI-32765), a potent inhibitor of BTK, in their clinical trials. Ibrutinib is an oral, highly specific and irreversible inhibitor of the BTK enzyme. Pharmacyclics Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif., and Janssen Research and Development, L.L.C., Horsham, Pa., are developing the drug to target B-cell malignancies, including various forms of leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

In studies led by Staudt and his NCI colleague, Wyndham Wilson, M.D., ibrutinib was first evaluated in a pilot trial at NCI in ABC DLBCL, and is now being evaluated in an ongoing multicenter study in DLBCL. Results from the pilot trial and individual cases from the ongoing trial indicate that the use of the single agent pill form of ibrutinib can elicit major anti-lymphoma effects with minimal side effects.

Participants in these studies were given ibrutinib as a pill at a fixed dose of 560 milligrams daily until the disease progresses. Ibrutinib induced multiple responses including some complete remissions in ABC lymphomas. Remissions were also observed in patients with non-ABC DLBCL, suggesting a broader role for the B-cell receptor pathway in this type of lymphoma. A final analysis will provide additional insights into the safety and efficacy of ibrutinib in the treatment of DLBCL.

?These results illustrate how an understanding of the molecular machinery inside a cancer cell can lead to new therapies which can kill tumor cells while sparing normal cells, thus greatly reducing toxicities for patients,? said Staudt.

UK Internet group: Surveillance program in works

LONDON (AP) ? Every email to your child. Every status update for your friends. Every message to your mistress.

The U.K. government is preparing proposals for a nationwide electronic surveillance network that could potentially keep track of every message sent by any Brit to anyone at any time, an industry official briefed on the government's moves said Sunday.

Plans for a massive government database of the country's phone and email traffic were abandoned in 2008 following a public outcry. But James Blessing of the Internet Service Providers' Association said the government appears to be "reintroducing it on a slightly different format."

Blessing said the move was disclosed to his association by Britain's Home Office during a meeting in recent weeks.

Britain's Home Office declined comment, saying an announcement would have to be made to Parliament first ? possibly as soon as next month.

There was no indication of exactly how such a system would work or to what degree of judicial oversight would be involved, if any.

A Home Office spokesman insisted that any new surveillance program would not involve prying into the content of emails or voice conversations. "It's not about the content," the official said, speaking anonymously in line with office policy. "It's about the who, what, where and when."

In a statement, the Home Office said it's vital that police and intelligence services "are able to obtain communications data in certain circumstances to investigate serious crime and terrorism, and to protect the public."

Authorities already have access to a huge wealth of communications data, although the standards for retaining it differ depending on whether, for example, conversations are carried out over the phone, in an email, or over an instant messaging program.

Generally, authorities request such information during an investigation. A standardized mass-monitoring program capturing of every email, every post and every tweet would spell the creation of a formidable new surveillance regime.

"It is not focusing on terrorists or on criminals," Conservative lawmaker David Davis told the BBC. "It is absolutely everybody."

"Our freedom and privacy has been protected by using the courts by saying: 'If you want to intercept, if you want to look at something, fine. If it is a terrorist or a criminal, go and ask a magistrate and you'll get your approval.'

"You shouldn't go beyond that in a decent, civilized society, but that is what is being proposed."

Cost could be an issue as well.

Blessing said it would likely require the installation of tens of thousands of specialized pieces of hardware to monitor the country's Internet traffic. The price tag would run into the billions of pounds (dollars), a cost he said would either have to be borne by the taxpayer or by Internet service companies, who would in turn have little choice but to pass it on to their customers.

In either case, U.K. Internet users would be paying extra to allow their government to spy on them more effectively.

The revamped surveillance plans were first reported by Britain's The Sunday Times newspaper.
