Driving is so 10 years ago, studies find

Driving in the US peaked back in 2004, according to two recent studies. And due to factors like increased used of mass transit and less interest in car ownership, driving rates may never recover to the levels of their early-aughts heyday.

By RIchard Read,?Guest blogger / July 27, 2013

A car heads north Tuesday June 18, 2013, on Illinois Route 255 near Fosterburg Road in Madison County, Ill. Another study has come out suggesting that driving in the US may be permanently on the wane.

The PIRG study made a number of intriguing claims, all of which pointed to the fact that driving in the U.S. peaked in 2004. And due to a range of factors -- notably, the increased use of mass transit and less interest in car ownership -- it's unlikely that driving rates will ever fully recover.

Now,?Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute has published a study of his own that seems to back the PIRG's claims.?

To reach his conclusions, Sivak examined driving trends in the U.S. from 1984 to 2011. He paid particular attention to the distances traveled per licensed driver, per vehicle, and per household.?

On each of those counts, the figures have plummeted since 2004.

According to a press release, the number of miles driven per licensed driver and per household have both tumbled 9 percent. The number of miles traveled per registered vehicle is off 5 percent:?

The latest rates (2011) are: distance driven per person, 8,494 miles (down from 9,314 in 2004); distance driven per licensed driver, 12,492 miles (down from 13,711 in 2004); distance driven per household, 22,069 miles (down from 24,349 in 2004); and distance driven per registered vehicle, 11,318 miles (down from 11,946 in 2004).

Like the PIRG, Sivak says that Americans haven't simply been driving less because of the slumping economy. American driving peaked in 2004, years before the Great Recession hit, and the figures haven't recovered at the same pace as the financial sector.

In other words, Americans (and likely others around the world) think about cars and transportation differently now, causing a shift in our driving habits.

What does that mean for the future? Which automakers will survive the paradigm shift? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Libyans vent anger at Islamists after activist's shooting

By Ghaith Shennib and Marie-Louise Gumuchian

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Protesters attacked offices of Libya's Muslim Brotherhood and the headquarters of a liberal coalition on Saturday after demonstrations sparked by assassinations in the eastern city of Benghazi turned violent, witnesses said.

Hundreds took to the streets overnight to denounce the killing of a prominent political activist and critic of the Brotherhood, Abdelsalam al-Mosmary, who was shot dead on Friday after leaving a mosque.

Mosmary was an outspoken opponent of the Brotherhood, whose Islamist political wing is the second biggest party in the national congress. Two military officials were also killed in Benghazi on Friday.

Libya's government is struggling to assert its authority over armed groups that helped topple veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, part of the wave of Arab Spring uprisings that also felled autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen.

Protesters in Benghazi set fire to two buildings - one belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood and another to its political wing, the Justice and Construction Party (JCP), witnesses said.

"They shouted 'Gather your belongings. Benghazi wants you out'," Benghazi resident Rami al-Shahibi said.

In Tripoli, a crowd stormed JCP headquarters before heading on to ransack the headquarters of the liberal National Forces Alliance (NFA), the country's biggest political party founded by wartime rebel prime minister Mahmoud Jibril.

There has been rising opposition to the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood, which has links to several government ministers. It has struggled to convince Libyans wary of foreign interference that it has no financial or administrative links to its namesake in neighboring Egypt, whose Islamist president Mohamed Mursi was overthrown by the military on July 3.

Tensions are also high between secularists and the ruling Islamists in Tunisia, where the funeral of an assassinated secular politician was taking place on Saturday.

"THE STATE HAS FAILED"

Many of the Libyan protesters accused the Brotherhood of being behind the killings in Benghazi, cradle of the 2011 revolution - a charge rejected by Abdulrahman al-Dibani, a JCP member in congress.

"We have strongly condemned the assassination of Mosmary and all the Libyan people should hear this and not openly blame us," he said.

Reached by phone, Bashir el-Kubti, head of the Muslim Brotherhood in Libya, declined to comment on the attacks on the movement's offices.

Libyans are growing increasingly frustrated as they witness continuous political squabbling and lawlessness across the north African country, a major oil producer.

"The people were in the streets because they are fed up of all political parties and how the state has failed," said Hisham Idris, who had demonstrated in Tripoli's Martyrs Square.

"Maybe the growing opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood is because they are trying to achieve their political ambitions using religion as a cover for their agenda."

The Tripoli protesters waved Libyan flags and shouted anti- Brotherhood slogans. A group of youths then descended on the JCP offices, smashing its windows, climbing on desks, grabbing documents and throwing them in the streets.

Graffiti reading "Go shave your beards hypocrites, Libya does not need you" was sprayed on the building.

Calm later returned to Tripoli and Benghazi but residents did not rule out more protests after Mosmary's funeral later in the day.

?No hidden agenda in India-Africa engagement?

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.firstpost.com --- Wednesday, July 24, 2013
Accra, July 24 (IANS) There is no hidden agenda in India's engagement with Africa, which is purely meant to cooperate on developing a continent with similarities and a desire to offer tried and tested solutions, India's Deputy High Commissioner to Ghana Ajaneesh Kumar has said. Ajaneesh Kumar, who has spent the past month meeting heads of the country's universities, told the faculty and students of the University of Development Studies (UDS) at Tamale, the northern regional capital, that his country's engagement with Africa is "based on solidarity, lack of conflict of interest and shared historical experiences." He said India and Ghana would continue to foster cordial relations which were established decades ago. UDS vice chancellor Haruna Yakubu appealed to the Indian High Commission to offer scholarships to its students to push their education, adding: "The university needs to build a strong collaboration with India in the form of scholarships in areas that are beneficial to both countries to facilitate development, especially in the area of ICT." In another meeting with officials from the Valley View University (VVU), a private institution, Ajaneesh Kumar said the Indian government provides a wide range of educational scholarships and training programmes to institutions and individuals who seek to further their studies in India ...

Google brings new full-screen compose window to Gmail

Google brings new fullscreen compose window to Gmail

It looks like those not satisfied with the recent Gmail redesign will soon have a new option to make things operate in a slightly more familiar manner. Google announced today that it's begun rolling out a new full-screen compose window that gives you more room to work with than the current option that's pinned to the lower right corner. What's more, you'll also find that the formatting toolbar is now on by default instead of requiring an extra click as it does now, and you can choose to make the full-screen view the default if you prefer it. If you don't have the new option already, Google says you should within the next couple of days.

Verizon Earns $5.2 Billion as iPhone Activations Remain Strong

Verizon's wireless business keeps rolling along, leading to a second-quarter profit of $5.2 billion, a 21 percent increase from the year-ago quarter.

The New York City-based operator's earnings rose from 64 cents per share in Q2 2012 to 78 cents in Q2 2013 ? a 21 percent gain. It was 73 cents per share if you exclude a one-time benefit that resulted from a recalculation of its pension plan.

Revenue was up a little more than 4 percent, to nearly $30 billion. That's approximately what most analysts were predicting. Revenue for the wireless side of the business was $20 billion, up 7.5 percent.

Verizon reported 7.5 million new smartphone activations, with a little more than half of those being iPhones ? not bad considering it's been nearly 10 months since Apple released the latest version of its iconic device. iPhone activations were up more than 40 percent compared to the year-ago quarter. More than one quarter of the smartphone activations were for new customers.

Overall, Verizon added 1 million subscribers last quarter, with the lion's share signing long-term contracts. The carrier added about 300,000 new subs for its FiOS Internet and TV services.

Verizon Wireless is jointly owned by Verizon and Vodafone.

Cruz, Paul address religious leaders in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Two Republican senators on Friday were courting a group that could wield powerful influence over the outcome of the state's 2016 GOP presidential caucuses: Iowa's evangelical pastors.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a conservative who rocketed to GOP stardom last year with a primary win over one of Texas' most powerful Republicans, privately addressed the conservative American Renewal Project on Friday morning in his first trip to Iowa.

"Pastors in Iowa and across the country are critical leaders, and pastors have a responsibility to speak up for their convictions," Cruz said after the speech. "I am honored to have the opportunity to visit with pastors who are speaking the truth about the enormous challenges this nation faces."

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the son of former 2012 presidential candidate, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, also spoke at the gathering around midday Friday.

"I think the Republican Party base is people who go to church. If you poll people and ask them if they go to church, maybe 60 percent of them vote Republican," Paul said after the event.

Cruz also headlined a small state Republican fundraiser at lunchtime, while Paul ? who visited Iowa in the spring ? was set to have a closed-door evening meeting with Latino and African American ministers from around the country. Before that session, Paul said the GOP needs to do a better job of outreach to diversify membership.

"I think if you ask people generically about issues, I think you'll find that a significant number of African-Americans as well as Hispanics are in favor of a lot of Republican positions," said Paul, who was joined by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus for the meeting. "We just need to get beyond whatever it is that is preventing people from considering voting for the Republican party."

But some Republicans, such as Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., see the two tea party favorites having limited appeal to voters, not only threatening GOP aspirations of winning back the White House but the party itself. A top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, King said Friday that he, too, was considering a presidential bid in 2016.

King said the fledgling field of Republican presidential candidates ? Paul and Cruz included ? were not talking about strong national defense or reaching out to the "old Reagan coalition" of working-class voters, such as construction workers, police officers and firefighters. He specifically cited Paul's filibuster in March to warn against the threat of unmanned drone attacks against U.S. citizens on American soil.

"Both of them endanger us winning nationally and also, more important than that, they hurt our national defense," King said. "The fact that they're out in Iowa, that they right now are setting the tone of the national debate, I think is harmful to the Republican Party, and in the long-run, despite their good intentions, I think it's harmful to the country, harmful to our national defense."

Cruz gave a measured response to King's statements.

"I don't know Mr. King. He is certainly entitled to his opinions," the freshman senator said. "I'm going to keep my focus not on politics but on the substance."

During a feisty lunchtime speech to Iowa state party faithful, Cruz said he wanted to abolish the Internal Revenue Service and defund President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

"The way we get this done is the American people stand together. Stop talking, start acting," Cruz said.

Paul, meanwhile, said he favored a strong national defense but thought some Republicans were too eager to go to war.

"(Former President Ronald) Reagan talks about a reluctance to go to war. That's a historic position of the Republican Party and I think I represent the Reagan tradition of peace through strength, not war through strength," he said.

Wooing evangelical ministers could be key to a Republican victory in the Iowa caucuses, the nation's first presidential nominating event. Cruz, Paul, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum ? the 2012 caucus winner ? all could appeal to the Christian conservative bloc of the party in 2016. None has declared his candidacy yet.

Political experts agreed that the ministers have yet to zero-in on a candidate, and a desire after eight years to put a candidate in the White House more in line with their views might push conservative Christians to consider whether they could live with someone who's more moderate.

"Evangelicals, they are looking. Social conservatives, they are looking," said Chip Saltsman, who was former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's campaign manager in 2008. "They want to be on a winning team."

Britain's anti-EU party relishes European election fight

By Claire Davenport and Luke Baker

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Britain's right-wing eurosceptic party, UKIP, believes it can win the largest share of British votes in elections to the European Parliament next year, a prospect that would rattle domestic politics and shake the corridors of Brussels.

Coming off a strong showing in local elections in May, when it polled more than 25 percent, and buoyed by a rising tide of anti-Europeanism, the UK Independence Party is now targeting next May's European elections, when it traditionally does well.

With a blunt message when it comes to the European Union - which UKIP sees as an evil empire that must be destroyed - the party is hoping popular frustration will boost it and like-minded parties across the continent.

"There is every prospect to realistically think that UKIP can mount a campaign on May 22 next year in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland where we could win the election," said Nigel Farage, the party's loquacious and outspoken leader.

"We could have the highest popular vote. I think that is an entirely realistic assumption," he told Reuters in an interview in his smoke-filled parliamentary office, where a coffin adorned with an image of the euro currency stands in one corner.

An ICM survey for the Guardian newspaper on Tuesday put UKIP on only 7 percent, down 5 percentage points in a month, and far too little in Britain's winner-takes-all system to sustain ambitions of claiming even a handful of seats in the national parliament.

But British voters traditionally take European as well as local elections less seriously then national ones, opening up opportunities for the smaller parties, and a first place for UKIP next May is not entirely out of the question.

MEMBERSHIP SOARING

The party has already attracted many disaffected Conservative voters - its membership has risen four-fold to 30,000 this year - and was only narrowly behind Labour and the Liberal Democrats at the last European elections in 2009.

Since then, Europe has been in crisis, with unemployment surging, economies contracting and growth prospects dimming, all of which is expected to fuel support for UKIP and similar "protest parties" in France, Italy, Germany and elsewhere.

Farage dismisses the "protest party" label, saying that disaffection with Europe is strong on the right, left and centre and that he expects that to be reflected in the next parliament.

Some political analysts see the protest vote accounting for 25-30 percent of the 751 seats in the chamber, a proportion that would alter the power balance and greatly complicate how the EU is managed.

Farage will not be drawn on how large he expects it to be, but thinks 30 percent is not impossible.

"Lots of eurosceptic groups with varying shades of euroscepticism will get elected from lots of European countries," he said, adding that the parties were not at this stage coordinating efforts across the 28 EU member states.

"There is no James Bond figure sitting here stroking a white cat and planning the downfall of the European Union. Although I wish there were in some way," he said, laughing.

While the European elections, which take place from May 22-25, are more than 10 months away, they already loom large in conversation and political calculation in Brussels.

If Europe's four traditional blocs - the centre-right European People's Party, the Socialists, the Liberals and the Greens - do badly in the polls, it could make it difficult to form a workable majority.

LIFE MORE COMPLICATED

That in turn will complicate the nomination of the next president of the European Commission, the EU executive, and make the passage of laws on banking-sector reform, data-sharing and environment policy that much harder.

Because eurosceptic parties are so diverse, they are not likely to form a cohesive bloc, but Farage still sees the prospect of some coordination. "It could be great fun," he says with a raucous laugh fuelled by years of smoking.

Asked with whom he feels a natural allegiance, Farage mentions Italy's Beppe Grillo and his Five Star movement. He calls French nationalist leader Marine Le Pen "brave" and admirable, but is uncomfortable with elements of her party.

"The whole anti-Semitic baggage is so great with that party that I don't really see her succeeding," he said.

Mostly, he sees the greatest impact from an anti-EU vote next year falling on domestic politics, where his mind is focused on chipping away at Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives and winning a seat in the British parliament.

Asked if he wants to be disruptive in Europe, Farage dismisses the thought, saying it has never been his aim.

"I am not a football hooligan. I'm a cricket fan," he says. "I like to criticise from the boundary ropes. Pitch invasions with shaven heads and tattoos, that's not for me."

Farage is, however, an agitator in Brussels, and his desire to undermine the European Union and those he refers to as the "bad people" in Brussels never slackens.

"I have no doubt that it won't be here in 30 years," he says. "At some point, patience will snap, and I suspect that what will break up Europe won't be democratic politics, it will be something far less pleasant, I'm afraid."

WiLan shares shrug off negative court ruling in patent suit

(Reuters) - Shares of Canadian patent licensing company WiLan Inc soared on Tuesday, shrugging off a court ruling that four of its patents had not been infringed.

WiLan said on Monday a jury found Alcatel-Lucent USA Inc , Ericsson Inc , HTC Corp and Sony Mobile Communications

WiLan's Nasdaq-listed shares fell as much as 33 percent after the bell on Monday on the news but surged 15 percent on Tuesday. Its Toronto-listed shares rose 19 percent to C$3.91.

Some analysts said the company, whose principal source of revenue is from licensing its patent and licensing portfolios on behalf of third-party patent holders, lost a battle, not the war, while others termed the judgment "a bump in the road".

"It was a negative announcement but I think I would frame it as one step in a longer process as opposed to the very negative reaction that the markets had gone into yesterday," Canaccord Genuity analyst Robert Young said.

Stifel Nicolaus analyst Blair Abernethy said the company has multiple relevant patents in its portfolio of over 3,000 patents and it could initiate further lawsuits to secure licenses.

"There is a high likelihood that WiLAN will appeal this verdict," said Abernethy, who maintained a "buy" rating on the stock but cut the price target to C$5.50 from C$6.
