Sex of ancient bird fossils determined

An ancient, beaked bird that lived in what is today northeastern China was ovulating when she, yes "she," perished some 125 million years ago, suggests new research that can reveal the gender of bird fossils.

Scientists investigated the ancient, beaked bird Confuciusornis sanctus. Hundreds of fossils of the extinct, crow-sized species are found in lake deposits in northeastern China. The area back then was "a seasonal forest that surrounded small lakes, a very rich ecosystem with a great variety of animals and plants," said researcher Luis Chiappe, paleontologist and director of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County's Dinosaur Institute.

Some fossils of this ancient bird were discovered with pairs of long, almost body-length ornamental tail feathers, while others were not. Scientists had suggested these differences were sexual in nature; in modern birds, males, such as peacocks, are often flamboyantly showy to court the opposite sex, while females, such as peahens, are typically rather drab, presumably to avoid attracting the attention of predators to themselves or their young.

Scientists had little evidence to prove whether the more flashy Confuciusornis sanctus fossils were male or not, however. But now researchers have found details in these skeletons that apparently enable clear gender identification, suggesting the showier fossils were indeed male. [ Avian Ancestors: Dinosaurs That Learned to Fly ]

Specifically, the researchers discovered medullary bone, spongy tissue unique to reproductively active female birds, in a specimen unearthed by local farmers. Medullary bone helps female birds manufacture eggshells.

"I think that it is so exciting to be able to say with certainty that this 125-million-year-old fossil bird was a reproductively active female," researcher Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, a paleobiologist at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, told LiveScience.

"People might wonder why this has never been found before," Chinsamy-Turan added. "The reason is that for medullary bone to be observed, the female bird has to be in a particular physiological state ? that is, ovulating, or just having laid eggs."

This female fossil did not possess ornamental feathers, which supports the idea that ancient female birds were as drab as their modern counterparts.

Intriguingly, researchers found medullary bone in some fossils even before the skeletons of those birds were full-grown. This suggests that this and other early birds matured sexually well before their skeletons matured.

"The most important conclusion is that early birds had reproductive patterns very different from their living counterparts and more akin to large dinosaurs," Chiappe told LiveScience.

The research could help scientists determine the sex of birds that lived millions of years ago, as well as shed light on ancient sexual maturity patterns. Future research should analyze other early bird species, Chiappe said.

The scientists detailed their findings online Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.

LG Optimus G sales hit 1 million worldwide

LG Optimus G sales hit 1 million worldwide

LG proved with the Optimus G that it can produce a smartphone that stacks up with the best of 'em, and according to the company's newly released sales figures, consumers are starting to take notice. As it stands, more than 1 million Optimus G's have been sold since the handset's September debut. While the figure pales in comparison to heavyweights like the Galaxy S III and iPhone 5, that's not too shabby for a phone that's only been available in North America since November. Given the similarities between the Optimus G and the Nexus 4, we're quite curious to know how sales of the two smartphones compare, but Google's currently keeping those numbers close to its chest. That said, there's little doubt that LG currently has its hands full at the production line.

(AP) ? A camera that records seal-pupping activities on a remote Maine island began streaming live to the public Thursday in what's believed to be the first live-streaming camera at an East Coast seal-pupping site.

Similar high-definition cameras have been set up around the world in recent years to capture the activities of eagles, polar bears, loons, black bears and other animals. The camera on Seal Island, about 20 miles off the midcoast of Maine, provides views of gray seals that migrate to the island each year to give birth.

It's expensive and difficult for scientists to visit gray seal-pupping grounds because they are on islands, with the births taking place in the winter when ocean conditions can be inhospitable.

Seal Island's tower-mounted camera gives scientists a firsthand look into the progression of seal-pupping season so they can gather information such as when peak pupping occurs and how long it takes seal pups to molt, said Stephanie Wood, a biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

It also allows the public to watch "nature in action," she said.

The 65-acre island is owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and managed in cooperation with the National Audubon Society. Audubon, in conjunction with explore.org, set up two cameras on the island last spring to stream live video of clown-like Atlantic puffins that make the island their home each summer.

With the puffins gone for the season, Audubon offered to let NOAA keep one of the cameras on the island to record the gray seals that swim there each fall.

Seal Island is the second-largest pupping ground for gray seals in the U.S., with more than 500 living there during the six-week season from December into early February. (Muskeget Island off southern Massachusetts has the largest breeding colony.)

The project is funded by explore.org, a philanthropic organization in Santa Monica, Calif., and a division of the Annenberg Foundation, with the aim of connecting people to nature. The video can be seen on explore.org's website.

"With the new seal pupping cam, we are helping people escape the urban squalor and, if only for a moment, reconnect with nature in its purest state," Charlie Annenberg, founder of explore.org, said in a statement.

Wood and explore.org say they don't know of any other camera that streams live video of gray seals giving birth. Gordon Waring, who heads the seal research program at NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, Mass., said he's not aware of any cameras either, but that it's possible they might be used in other countries.

Scientists and explore.org producers can operate the camera remotely ? tilting it, moving it side to side and zooming in and out ? to get better views of the 300-pound mother seals and the newborn pups that are covered in thick, white fur. The camera also provides shots of seals quarreling among themselves and interacting with bald eagles.

The camera also will allow biologists to identify adult seals that have been tagged or branded elsewhere and learn more about their movements and life history, Wood said.

White House praises Sen. Rubio's immigration proposals

Republican Senator Marco Rubio speaks in Iowa in November. (Charlie Neibergall/AP)The White House praised Republican Sen. Marco Rubio?s proposals for an overhaul of immigration policy and said they ?bode well? for bipartisan action early in President Barack Obama?s second term.

Obama ?expects to move very quickly on immigration after the inauguration,? press secretary Jay Carney told reporters. The president is expected to lay out some principles on the issue in his Feb. 12 State of the Union speech.

?The reports about Sen. Rubio?s ideas bode well for a productive bipartisan debate,? Carney said. ?We hope that it signals a change in the Republican approach to this issue, because if we are going to get this done it?s going to take more than just a handful of Republicans working across the aisle.?

The press secretary had been asked about proposals from Rubio?whose name sits near the top of the 2016 field of Republican presidential contenders?to undertake sweeping changes in the way America handles immigration. According to the Wall Street Journal, Rubio backs tightening border controls but making it easier for high-skilled workers and seasonal farm workers to enter the country, and favors giving the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. a path to getting a work permit and, eventually, citizenship.

Can the polarized Congress handle two big issues?immigration reform and proposals to reduce gun violence?simultaneously?

"There is no reason to believe that these kinds of issues can?t be worked on at the same time and you can expect the president to push for both measures?to reduce gun violence and for comprehensive immigration reform?because they are both priorities," Carney said.

Rubio's ideas recall Obama's own proposals?something Carney did not fail to note.

?We are encouraged," Carney said, to find that Rubio's plan "so closely reflects the president's blueprint for reform."

He added that "the president has long called for partners from both sides of the aisle, and he has lamented the absence of partners from the other side of the aisle. It used to be a bipartisan pursuit. He hopes that this augurs well for the future.?

Carney defended the president's decision not to reach out personally (yet) to Rubio. As the reform process proceeds, the press secretary insisted, "it will involve engagement with Democrats and Republicans, and you can expect that that will happen.?

He added: ?To my knowledge, Sen. Rubio has yet to put anything on paper or draw up any legislation. We welcome reports of his positions and look forward to working with him and other Republicans in pursuit of comprehensive immigration reform, because it?s the right thing to do for the country, and the president considers it a high priority."
