Jeremy Lin brings Rockets to ancestral homeland

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Houston Rockets guard Jeremy Lin arrived in Taiwan on Friday to play in his parents' homeland.

The Rockets will face the Indiana Pacers in an NBA preseason game Sunday in Taipei — a special occasion for the league's first American-born player of Taiwanese descent.

"I kind of see this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Lin told a packed news conference. "I don't know if I'll ever be able to come back and play a NBA preseason game here where my parents were born and raised.

"Definitely, I am looking forward to it. It's a celebration in some sense."

The Rockets and Pacers traveled to Taipei from Manila, where Houston beat Indiana 116-96 on Thursday in the first NBA preseason game in the Philippines.

Taiwan is still in the throes of "Linsanity," with Lin T-shirts and related paraphernalia popular on this self-governing island of 23 million people, 100-miles off the China coast.

Rockets coach Kevin McHale said Lin learned last season about the grind of a full NBA season and praised him for the hard work he put in over the summer to improve his game.

"He worked really, really hard," McHale said. "I think he's going to get better and better."

Home to a professional basketball league of its own, Taiwan fits into the NBA's plans to expand its brand internationally. Retired star Yao Ming of China gave the league a massive lift in the world's largest single market.

The game on Sunday is the second NBA exhibition in Taipei in four years. The Pacers played the Denver Nuggets in October 2009.

"We spent a lot time together off the court," new Rockets center Dwight Howard said. "This trip has really helped us bond. I am very, very excited about our future as a team. I believe that everybody has a confidence that we can win a championship. That's the main thing."

Pacers center Roy Hibbert said this Indiana team is different from the one that played here four years ago.

"We went from a team that was trying to get to the playoffs to being a contender," he said. "We have just gotten stronger. We went from a 3-point shooting team to a team that plays physical. Our whole identity changed.

"So you are definitely going to see a different Pacers than you saw four or five years ago."

Manzo leaving 'The Real Housewives of New Jersey'

NEW YORK (AP) — One of the original members of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" has announced she's leaving the show after five seasons.

Caroline Manzo made the announcement Sunday on Twitter and on her blog on Bravo's website after "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" aired the final part of the show's reunion.

She says the reality show — known for its brawls, screaming and family fights — has become something she hopes her future grandchildren will never see.

Manzo wrote that she's filming a pilot spinoff called "Manzo'd With Children" that would give "a very different look" at her family.

An email to Bravo seeking comment wasn't immediately returned Monday.

UK banking reforms leave London exposed - banking commission

By William James

LONDON (Reuters) - Reform of Britain's scandal-hit banking industry is too piecemeal, undermining its ability to boost the economy and leaving it exposed to further crisis, the lawmaker who drafted initial plans for an overhaul told Reuters.

Andrew Tyrie, the chairman of a government-appointed banking commission, said he was concerned that the government was ignoring important elements of his blueprint for reform and sometimes mistakenly favouring non-binding guidelines over statutory legislation.

"The commission is not yet happy," Tyrie said in an interview, referring to his own parliamentary panel. "We're watching and we're not going to go away," he said, sipping black tea in his office overlooking the River Thames.

The government asked his commission to identify the failings that took Britain's banks to the brink of collapse in 2008 and triggered damaging mis-selling and rate-fixing scandals, and to suggest changes to ensure such mistakes were never repeated.

Many of the changes that Tyrie's commission recommended in June were included in the government's Banking Reform Bill, legislation designed to stabilise and protect the financial sector. It is expected to become law early next year.

But Tyrie said the government was being too selective.

"We don't know which tools might become crucial, but what we do know, and what the Banking Commission concluded, is that reforms and improvements are needed on many fronts, and those fronts are interlocking," he said. "Taken together they will give us a much better chance of protecting ourselves."

Tyrie highlighted the government's plan to regulate banks' leverage ratios - the total amount of lending versus capital - which his commission has described as "the single most important tool to deliver a safer and more secure banking system."

The government has said it will grant oversight over leverage to the Bank of England's Financial Policy Committee (FPC) in 2018, but has given itself the right to change its mind in 2017.

"In other words, they are not committing to handing powers over to the FPC in five years' time. They're committed to (only) taking a look at whether they will," said Tyrie.

REPUTATION

Tyrie also worries that powers to claw back bankers' bonuses aren't being written into law and that regulators won't get new powers to intervene at banks where leadership may be failing.

In the past, Tyrie has complained that significant changes to the banking reform bill were being rushed through so it could become law in 2014, saying it was crucial to ensure such revisions were in line with his commission's proposals.

Britain's ability to bounce back from three years of economic stagnation also hinges on the reforms because without greater confidence in the strength of the banking system businesses will not borrow, invest and grow, Tyrie said.

"The recovery is not going to be secured by some grand gestures on a few massive projects," he said, outlining the limits of government intervention in the economy.

"It's going to be secured by the business decisions of hundreds of thousands of people, small businessmen and sole traders, underpinned by an improvement in confidence."

He said the Royal Bank of Scotland, which the government bailed out in exchange for an 82 percent stake, should be doing much more to support small businesses.

Tyrie's commission has been pushing the government to consider hiving off the bank's toxic assets into a separate 'bad bank', freeing up the 'good bank' to lend more, but a promised government analysis on the subject has yet to be published.

He said that review, being prepared by investment bank Rothschild and due in the next two months, needed to be arrived at "wholly independently and not on the basis of restrictive guidance by RBS, regulators and particularly government."

Air Force fires general overseeing nuclear missiles

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The two-star general overseeing America's arsenal of intercontinental missiles was fired on Friday for personal misbehavior, the Air Force said, saying the matter was not tied to the operational readiness of U.S. nuclear missiles.

The Air Force said the removal of Major General Michael Carey from his job as commander of the 20th Air Force was due to due to a loss of trust and confidence but did not elaborate.

The decision was "based on information from an Inspector General investigation into Carey's behavior during a temporary duty assignment," the Air Force said in a statement.

"20th AF continues to execute its mission of around-the-clock nuclear deterrence in a safe, secure and effective manner," Lieutenant General James Kowalski, commander of the Air Force Global Strike Command, said in a statement.

"It's unfortunate that I've had to relieve an officer who's had an otherwise distinctive career spanning 35 years of commendable service."

The Air Force said the matter also did not relate to sexual assault.

Headquartered at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, the 20th Air Force is responsible for the nation's three intercontinental ballistic missile wings.

The announcement came just two days after the deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command, which oversees all of America's nuclear arsenal as well as its space operations, was relieved from his job during an investigation into issues related to gambling.

Metro teachers leaving for better jobs abroad

With layoffs, scandals, and pay cuts, many Atlanta metro teachers are looking elsewhere to utilize their talents. And for some, that means travelling halfway around the world for a job.?

A dream job.?

"The benefits of going? Salary, of course!" laughed Bonnie Dyer. "The salary is outstanding."?

Dyer and Ahmed Ahmed are former DeKalb County educators, who are getting ready to teach in the United Arab Emirates.?

"They pay for your housing; they pay for your medical; and they'll sponsor up to three children under the age of 18," she said. "They guarantee that you can save up to 60-70 percent of your salary."?

In addition, English as Second Language teachers typically don't have to pay taxes. And in a time when many educators feel under-valued and overworked, teaching abroad can be a smart career move.?

"I've experienced a lot of teachers who've experienced lay-offs," said Ahmed. "A lot of ex-teachers who've experienced cutbacks in terms of no standard of living increases and furlough days."

Between the two of them, Dyer and Ahmed say they have six degrees and six teaching certifications. And yet every year, their jobs were not guaranteed with schools operating on a shoestring, plus new teachers being hired for less.?

They believe many other veteran educators will join the migration to other countries.?

"Many of their teachers and administrators are going over to the UAE to teach," Dyer said. "And it's not just the UAE, it's Saudi Arabia, there's some in Kuwait."?

Changing locales to a shining city in the desert is just one of the perks for ESL teachers. Another is the satisfaction of knowing that they are wanted.?

"They want an opportunity where they can expand career-wise and just to avoid a lot of the things that have happened in terms of cutbacks, teacher layoffs, standard of living decreases, and so forth," Ahmed said. "So this is definitely a great opportunity."?

Democratic governors nervous about health plan

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Democratic governors say they are nervous about getting the new federal health care law implemented but add they will be better positioned in next year's elections than many of their Republican counterparts who have resisted the far-reaching and politically polarizing measure.

Several of the 12 Democratic governors shared that sense of nervousness-veiled-by-optimism at the National Governors Association meeting Saturday in Milwaukee.

"There's some angst, and you can see that from the decision the administration made a couple weeks ago," said Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. "There's a lot of work to do."

By next Jan. 1, most people will be required to have insurance. States have to set up exchanges by Oct. 1, when uninsured individuals can start buying subsidized private health coverage that would go into effect Jan 1, and businesses with more than 50 employees working 30 or more hours a week were supposed to offer affordable health care to their workers or risk a series of escalating tax penalties.

But businesses said they needed more time, and on July 2, President Barack Obama's administration abruptly extended the deadline one year ? to Jan. 1, 2015.

That caused some Democrats in Congress to worry the program would not be ready on time, as states are building online platforms for their residents to use to comply with the law. Although the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act in June 2012, the Republican-controlled House has voted 40 times since Obama signed the law in 2010 to repeal, defund or scale it back, most recently Friday.

As Congress prepared to head home for a five-week recess, Obama sought to calm jittery Democrats, assuring them that they are "on the right side of history" despite problems with the law's launch.

Republicans have stated openly they plan to use the slow economic recovery and the health care law to attack Democrats in the 2014 congressional elections.

But Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, a Republican, said GOP governors could get blamed next year, even if they worked to meet its requirements, a situation that could be aggravated by Republicans in the U.S. House who continue to hold votes to attack it.

"My approach is not to complain about things, but to get it done best we can," said Branstad, who has been a vocal critic of the law. "It's our responsibility."

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the governors' host and a possible 2016 Republican presidential prospect, said Obama delayed the employer mandate out of fear that voters would blame Democrats in the 2014 elections if the economy suffered as a result of the new law.

"A cynic would be right to say the reason they pushed back the employer mandate had little to nothing to do with policy and everything to do with politics," Walker said.

Most of the two dozen governors from both parties gathered at the conference expressed confidence that their states would be ready on time, especially Democrats, although they said the work is daunting.

"Any time you go and make this much change in this short a period of time, it does cause headaches," Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said.

But with that pain comes progress, Hickenlooper and others argued. And those Republicans who have resisted or delayed taking action will pay the price.

Long before election day, the philosophical debate over the bill will have turned into a practical reality for millions of newly insured voters.

"Choosing ideology over jobs and affordable health care is a false choice, and it's an example of the differences between Republicans and Democrats," Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, said.

Among the challenges states are encountering are the technological requirements to allow buyers to search for insurers, rates and benefits on the exchanges. Others are training state employees to administer the program and marketing it to millions of Americans, all during a time of strained state budgets. Marketing employees were often among the first to lose their jobs.

Despite the headaches, the alternative to the status quo is far worse, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said.

"Nothing could be more complicated than doing what we were doing before, which was to throw away more and more money on more expensive care for worse results," said O'Malley, a Democrat also mulling a 2016 White House run.

Taliban deny attack on Indian consulate in Afghanistan

Three suicide attackers killed at least nine civilians, most of them children, in a botched attack Saturday on the Indian consulate in Afghanistan. Were the attackers from Pakistan?

Three suicide attackers killed at least nine civilians, most of them children, in a botched attack Saturday on the Indian consulate in an eastern Afghan city near the border with Pakistan, security officials said.

Authorities also reported that 22 police officers and over 70 Taliban fighters died in two days of fighting earlier in the week in the same province touched off by a feud between militants and villagers. Officials regularly announce high militant death tolls that are impossible to independently confirm.

Militants, mostly smaller groups based in Pakistan, have targeted Indian diplomatic interests multiple times in recent years. Afghanistan's main insurgent group, the Taliban, denied in a text message that it had carried out the attack.

Militant groups known for attacking Indian interests include Lashkar-e-Taiba, blamed for the 2008 attack on the Indian city of Mumbai that killed 166 people. LeT has been active in Afghanistan in recent years, often teaming up with insurgent groups operating in the eastern part of the country near the frontier with Pakistan. Last year the U.S.-led military coalition arrested a senior LeT leader in eastern Afghanistan.

India has been frustrated by Pakistan's failure to crack down on Lashkar-e-Taiba, which has strong historical links with Pakistani intelligence. Pakistan has always viewed India as a potential rival in Afghanistan, which it considers its strategic backyard.

"Such coward attacks will not deter India from providing reconstruction and developmental assistance to our true friend, Afghanistan," the Indian Embassy Tweeted in reaction to the consulate bombing.

In the latest attack, police fired on the militants as they approached a checkpoint outside the consulate in Jalalabad, prompting one of them to set off their explosives-laden car, said Masum Khan Hashimi, the deputy police chief of Nangarhar province.

The blast killed nine bystanders, and wounded another 24 people including a policeman. Six of the dead and three of the wounded were children, said Jalalabad hospital director Dr. Humayun Zahir. He did not give their specific ages.

All three attackers also died, although it was not clear how many were killed by police fire and how many by the explosion.

In New Delhi, India's External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said that all Indian officials in the consulate were safe.

Hashimi said the Jalalabad attack began when three men in a car approached the checkpoint. Two of the men got out of the car wearing vests rigged with explosives and a police guard immediately opened fire on them, Hashimi said. He added that the third man then detonated a large bomb located inside the car.

In 2010, two Kabul guest houses popular among Indians were attacked, killing more than six Indians. India blamed that attack on LeT.

The Indian Embassy was bombed in 2008 and again in 2009, leaving 75 people dead in the two attacks.

The attack came as the U.S. planned to close its embassies in the Muslim world for the weekend due to an al-Qaida threat.

In other violence in the same province, 22 police officers and 76 Taliban were killed in the Sherzad district of Nangarhar in two days of battles with insurgents that broke out when militants shot a tribal elder, officials and police said.

The militant death toll could not be checked independently, but four separate officials confirmed the police death toll.

Fighting has intensified in eastern and southern parts of Afghanistan in recent months, especially since the mid-June handover of security responsibilities from the U.S.-led international military coalition to the Afghan national security forces. The Taliban have been fighting to regain ground they lost in the past three years to foreign forces, and violence is expected to spike again after the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

So far this year, a total of 613 Afghan and 470 Afghan soldiers have been killed in fighting.

The battles in the Sherzad district began on Wednesday when Taliban fighters shot and killed a tribal elder for allegedly cooperating with the government of President Hamid Karzai, sparking retaliation from the family and other villagers, residents said.

According to Ahmad Mushtaq, a villager, that initial gun battle resulted in the deaths of a number of Taliban. The militants retaliated by kidnapping 12 members of a family, who were rescued when Afghan police rushed to the scene and, backed by reinforcements from Jalalabad, mounted a rescue operation.

A number of Taliban again were killed and wounded during this rescue operation, Sherzad district chief Shukrullah Durani said. But when the reinforcements were on their way back to Jalalabad they were attacked by big number of Taliban.

The Taliban, who numbered about two hundred, were fleeing an Afghan army operation in a neighboring province when they ran into the police convoy on Thursday.

In a battle which lasted hours, 22 police officers were killed along with scores of Taliban fighters, Durani and three other officials said. The three spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Durani said the police requested air support from NATO, but none came. "This is why 22 police... were killed," he said. "If we had received air support we would not have lost such a big number of police and at the same time all Taliban in the area would have been killed and would not have escaped this time."

It was unclear why the police did not receive air support. Coalition forces do provide such assistance when requested and if the fighting is not in an inhabited area.

Ohio Latest State to Announce Insurance Rate Spikes | Washington ...

AP

AP

BY: Washington Free Beacon Staff

Health insurance premiums for individuals in Ohio are rising by 41 percent on average because of Obamacare, Politico reported Thursday.

The Ohio Insurance Department says individuals buying health insurance can expect an average 41 percent increase next year because of the president?s health care law. It projects small-business premiums will increase 18 percent for those in the SHOP exchange. Overall costs to insurers are expected to rise 83 percent, the department said.

?Ohio has traditionally had a more competitive health insurance market than other states with a wider range of prices and choices ? from simple, high deductible coverage to comprehensive, full service plans,? said Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, a vocal Obamacare critic who?s also the state?s insurance commissioner. ?That level of diversity is essentially outlawed under Obamacare so Ohio?s rates and premiums are going up significantly, and going up more than in other states where prices were already high.? The figures do not take into account subsidies some people will receive.

Ohio is the latest state to announce rising premiums for health insurance.

Insurance rates on the individual market in Georgia are rising significantly, the Georgia insurance commissioner announced on Monday. A 25 year-old male will pay 85 to 198 percent more for insurance under the Obamacare exchange.

Indiana also announced that its premiums are rising significantly.

The federal government is running the exchanges for all three states.

Chevron second-quarter earnings drop on cheaper oil, maintenance

(Reuters) - Chevron Corp posted a larger-than-expected decline in quarterly profit on Friday as a fall in oil prices knocked oil and gas production earnings and its U.S. refining unit slowly recovered from a refinery fire a year ago.

Second-quarter net income fell 26 percent to $5.37 billion, or $2.77 per share, from $7.21 billion, or $3.66 per share, a year earlier. Analysts, on average, expected $2.96 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Chevron, the second-largest U.S. oil company produced 2.58 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, down from 2.62 million bpd a year earlier. The company is targeting 2.65 million bpd for this year, and growth of 25 percent in output by 2017.

In the second quarter, Chevron's exploration and production earnings from outside the United States fell 10 percent to $3.87 billion, with operating expenses higher and the average sale price for liquids down to $94 per barrel, from $99 a year before.

U.S. earnings from refining and marketing declined more than 83 percent, with refinery crude input falling by 114,000 barrels per day to 814,000 bpd, mainly due to the fire at its Richmond, California, plant last August. The damaged unit there started up in April.

Chevron shares fell 1 percent to $125.06 in pre-market trading on Friday.

NYC woman dies after fall from 17th-floor balcony

By Shimon Prokupecz, Andrew Siff and Tracie Strahan, NBC New York

A Manhattan ad executive who went out to smoke on the?balcony of her 17th-floor apartment while on a first date plunged to her death early Thursday morning when she sat on the railing and it gave way, according to police sources.

Sources told NBC 4 New York that?Jennifer Rosoff, 35, and her date were on the balcony at about 12:30 a.m. and when she sat on the railing's corner, it broke and she plunged to the ground, hitting scaffolding on the way down.

Her date told investigators he heard two pops before the railing gave way.

Witnesses reported seeing a screaming man, believed to be Rosoff's date, running from the building at 400 E. 57th St in Sutton Place.?Police spoke to him and cleared him of any wrongdoing.

A source on the scene provided a description of the railing, which appeared to be metal, and was bent and twisted, with a cigarette lighter still sitting nearby.

The Buildings Department is investigating.

More from NBCNewYork.com

Only the higher-floor corner apartments in the gray brick building have balconies, and the Buildings Department issued a partial vacate order for them Thursday.

A neighbor of Rosoff on the 17th floor, who did not want to give his name, told NBC 4 New York his landlord had sent the superintendent and an inspector to examine his balcony two or three months ago.

"They just asked to peek at it, and I just assumed they were only talking about the surface of it, because that's what they had worked on," he said.

The landlord, Stonehenge Management, LLC, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Rosoff, who had worked at The New Yorker and Lucky Magazine,?was director of sales at TripleLift, an advertising company on Fifth Avenue. CEO Eric Berry told NBC 4 New York the staff was struggling Thursday after learning of her death.

"She was a well-loved and highly respected member of our team," Berry said in a statement. "The entire company is distraught by the loss of Ms. Rosoff?? she will be deeply missed."

White House 'extremely disappointed' with Russia

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it's extremely disappointed in Russia's decision to grant asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Snowden isn't a whistleblower or a dissident. He says it's not a positive development for U.S.-Russia relations and says the move undermines Russia's record of law enforcement cooperation with the U.S.

Carney says the White House is re-evaluating whether a planned fall summit with President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin should still occur.

Snowden's lawyer says the onetime NSA contract systems analyst has left the transit zone of a Moscow airport and has officially entered Russia after authorities granted him asylum for a year. Snowden has thanked Russia for giving him asylum and criticized the Obama administration as showing "no respect" for the law.

Denzel Washington is returning to Broadway

(AP) ? Denzel Washington is returning to Broadway ? but he won't be singing.

Standing with his wife, Pauletta Pearson, on the red carpet Monday at the premiere his new movie, "2 Guns," the Oscar- and Tony-winning actor said he's set to appear in a revival of Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun."

"We start previews in March," he said.

Washington then explained his motivation for returning to the stage.

"I'm trying to keep up with my wife. My wife has been doing a lot more theater than me," he said as Pearson smiled.

Washington said they were heading to North Carolina for the National Black Theatre Festival, where Pearson is starring in the award-winning "Power Play."

"I'm looking forward to one day singing," Washington said playfully to Pearson's amusement. "See, I just wanted to get something out of her. She knows I can't sing. But she can sing."

As they walked away, the 58-year-old actor continued: "I can sing. I can sing ... in the shower."

9 Things Nobody Ever Tells You About Post-Pregnancy Bodies

  • Your Bladder May Fail

"One of the main issues that many women have to deal with almost immediately is incontinence," said Dr. Mary Rosser, an assistant professor in the department of obstetrics, gynecology and women's health at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. Pregnancy and childbirth can weaken the pelvic floor muscles and, in some cases, cause damage to the nerves controlling the bladder -- regardless of how you deliver. Kegel exercises (think tightening your pelvic muscles as if you were trying to hold in urine) can help. Rosser typically tells her patients they can start kegel-ing almost immediately after birth, with the caveat that it shouldn't hurt. if it does, hold off until everything's healed."

  • You'll Lose Your Hair

No, not because of the stress of those early sleepless nights, but because during pregnancy the hair cycle "arrests" in the growth phase, explained Dr. Staci Tanouye, an OBGYN with the Mayo Clinic. Many pregnant women report having the thickest, fullest hair of their lives for the same reason. After pregnancy, the cycle restarts, so "there can be quite a bit of hair loss," Tanouye said. Many moms will get back to their normal thickness after a couple of months; others may end up with thinner hair indefinitely. But, silver lining! According to Rosser, the excess hair that also sprouts up on women's faces and bodies during pregnancy (the result of increased androgen, the male hormone) also typically falls off after baby is born.

  • You'll Sweat More

When you're pregnant, your body produces and retains more fluid, and after your baby's born, that fluid needs somewhere to go. That's why, in the days and weeks after their babies are born, many women experience serious night-sweats, in addition to peeing a lot more frequently. It's something Rosser personally experienced when she had a baby. "I'd told women about it, but I was dumbfounded," the OBGYN laughed. "I would wake up in cold sweats to the point that I had to take a shower to get warm."

  • Your Vagina Will Be Bigger (And Maybe A Little Gassy)

Yes, after you have a baby, your vagina will change. And no, it probably won't ever fully return to its pre-birth shape. But in most cases, any vaginal widening will be relatively minor. "After several weeks, women will see that it regains some muscle tone," said Rosser. "It shouldn't be a big change in the long run." It's also possible, though less common, for women to begin experiencing what is, essentially, vaginal gas. Dr. Shieva Ghofrany, an OBGYN with Stamford Hospital, in Conn., said she's had otherwise healthy patients tell her they notice a gas coming from their vaginas after they have babies. "Somehow, with all the changes, gas can escape from the rectum and slides into the vagina, then sneaks out," she explained. It should stop within a few months, said Ghofrany, who generally tells women to give their bodies a full eight to 10 months before everything truly settles down.

  • You'll Lose A Cup Size

It's not uncommon for women to drop a full bra size after having a baby, and we're talking compared to their pre-pregnancy chests, not those glorious mid- and post-pregnancy breasts. "They get saggy, they get smaller and it happens more with each pregnancy," Rosser said, adding that studies show the changes have less to do with breastfeeding than with pregnancy itself, as well as factors like whether a woman is overweight or a smoker.

  • ...And Your Breasts Could Leak For A Long Time

It's no surprise that breasts leak milk right after women have babies, but it is surprising for many women to discover that this can go on for years. Rosser's had women tell her their breasts began leaking a small amount up to two years after having their baby, typically triggered by hearing a friend or sister's newborn cry. Though it's usually harmless, Rosser does encourage women to go see a doctor to ensure that the discharge is normal.

  • You'll See Spots (In The Mirror)

Some women, particularly women with darker skin, develop melasma during pregnancy -- small patches of darker skin that look like freckles on their cheeks or foreheads -- explained Ghofrany. In some cases, the spots will fade, but many moms find that that melasma, often known as the "pregnancy mask," becomes permanent. If it's a concern, melasma can be treated with topical creams, Ghofrany said.

  • Your Feet Will Be Bigger

Immediately after your baby's birth, you may find that your feet and ankles swell, sometimes even more than they did when you were pregnant. Again, this has to do with all that fluid your body makes and retains during pregnancy, Rosser explained. It needs somewhere to go. Though that initial swelling should go away relatively quickly, many women find that the foot growth they experienced during pregnancy lasts for 6 months or beyond, and in some cases ... indefinitely. "Your feet can permanently go up by a size or two," said Ghofrany.

  • Your Overall Shape Will Change

"One of the things that many women don't realize is that even if they get back to their pre-pregnancy body weight, it'll be shaped differently," said Tanouye, who said that most of the changes will be in the "boobs, bottom and hips." Many women describe these hard-earned, motherly shape changes in the same way: "By the three month mark, I hear from a lot women that they're feeling better physically and better about their bodies -- and that they're feeling softer overall," she said. Perfect for snuggling equally soft babies, we say!

Berkus joins team for fantasy dog parks

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Interior designer Nate Berkus has been adding fantasy to homes for 16 years, inspiring people with just the right creative touch. But he's been a dog-lover even longer, and he's turning his design expertise to a half-million-dollar fantasy dog park.

Berkus, 41, has joined the creative team for the 2014 Beneful Dream Dog Park Contest. Contestants have to answer one question: "If you had $500,000 to create a Dream Dog Park where you and your best buddy can play together, what would you do?"

In Lancaster, Pa., the answer included a doggy amusement park with a tennis ball tree and a 40-foot roller coaster bridge. The park there ? the third contest winner ? opens Aug. 6.

The first park was built in Johns Creek, Ga., with a family destination theme and includes a bone-shaped bridge, two splash pads, tunnels, rubberized mulch paths and shade trees. The second park in Alabaster, Ala., has synthetic turf, agility rings, a walking trail, a fetch football field, fire hydrant goalposts and a mulch adventure path with tunnels, said Brent Gleckler, brand director for Beneful dog food.

"There is nothing I love more than being with my dog," Berkus said of sidekick Tucker, a black mutt. Together, they visit a dog park nearly every night.

The parks in Alabaster and Johns Creek have been tourist magnets. In Georgia, the city had to make 72 new parking spaces next to the park to accommodate visitors.

In Alabama, people take good care of the park, but the city does a walkthrough once a day, sprays it down twice a week and uses a biodegradable chemical once a month, city parks director Tim Hamm said.

The dog park is part the city's flagship Veteran's Park, with a ball field complex, 2.5-mile walking trail, eight pavilions with picnic tables, two playgrounds, a skateboard park and veteran's memorial, Hamm said.

Every day, they get calls from tourists asking about hours and directions.

"The more people that come to our city, the more people will stop, eat and buy gas. We are all for that. Out-of-town users are great," Hamm said. "Anybody who wants to come, we more than welcome them in town."

Beneful has some requirements ? large dogs must be separated from small dogs; the park has to be fenced for off-leash play; and it has to be a public or nonprofit park, open to the public at no charge.

"A park is a place for a community to come together. These parks are specifically designed for pet owners and their dogs, but everyone is welcome," Berkus said. "We're really looking at it from the dog's perspective. We will use smart materials that will last a long time, and make sure we factor in pet behaviors and create not only beautiful fun places but intelligently laid out places as well."

At Alabaster, the dog rules are typical of most dog parks: The off-leash area is for dogs, their handlers and those accompanying them, dogs have to be vaccinated, puppies and adult females in heat are banned and everyone has to clean up after their own dog.

Hamm said except for a few minor fights, there has been no trouble at the park. If there is a fight on your watch, the park has that covered too: A sign tells visitors "How to Break Up a Dog Fight."

Berkus, who has an upcoming NBC show called "American Dream Builders," is teaming up with contractor Jason Cameron, host of the DIY Network's "Man Caves," and Arden Moore, founder of fourleggedlife.com, for the latest contest.

So if Berkus were asked to design a $500,000 park for Tucker, what would he do?

"I would probably spend $495,000 bringing in squirrels because that's what Tucker likes. He's pretty simple. The sky is really the limit. It's an enormous budget and an enormous contribution to the communities where these parks are built and it really is meant to be a fantasyland."

Driving is so 10 years ago, studies find

Driving in the US peaked back in 2004, according to two recent studies. And due to factors like increased used of mass transit and less interest in car ownership, driving rates may never recover to the levels of their early-aughts heyday.

    By RIchard Read,?Guest blogger / July 27, 2013

A car heads north Tuesday June 18, 2013, on Illinois Route 255 near Fosterburg Road in Madison County, Ill. Another study has come out suggesting that driving in the US may be permanently on the wane.

Back in May, the ?U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) published?a study that showed Americans are driving less.

The PIRG study made a number of intriguing claims, all of which pointed to the fact that driving in the U.S. peaked in 2004. And due to a range of factors -- notably, the increased use of mass transit and less interest in car ownership -- it's unlikely that driving rates will ever fully recover.

Now,?Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute has published a study of his own that seems to back the PIRG's claims.?

To reach his conclusions, Sivak examined driving trends in the U.S. from 1984 to 2011. He paid particular attention to the distances traveled per licensed driver, per vehicle, and per household.?

On each of those counts, the figures have plummeted since 2004.

According to a press release, the number of miles driven per licensed driver and per household have both tumbled 9 percent. The number of miles traveled per registered vehicle is off 5 percent:?

The latest rates (2011) are: distance driven per person, 8,494 miles (down from 9,314 in 2004); distance driven per licensed driver, 12,492 miles (down from 13,711 in 2004); distance driven per household, 22,069 miles (down from 24,349 in 2004); and distance driven per registered vehicle, 11,318 miles (down from 11,946 in 2004).

Like the PIRG, Sivak says that Americans haven't simply been driving less because of the slumping economy. American driving peaked in 2004, years before the Great Recession hit, and the figures haven't recovered at the same pace as the financial sector.

In other words, Americans (and likely others around the world) think about cars and transportation differently now, causing a shift in our driving habits.

What does that mean for the future? Which automakers will survive the paradigm shift? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
