Want to Launch A Rocket? Don't Forget Your Lucky Tux

The third time was a charm for twin NASA radiation-tracking probes, which launched into space today (Aug. 30) in a dazzling predawn display. And the succesful blastoff just might have received a boost by a handy "good-luck" tuxedo worn by the mission's project manager.

After two delays last week, NASA's?Radiation Belt Storm Probes lifted off ?on a mission to study the Van Allen radiation belts that encircle Earth. The probes, dubbed?RBSP for short, launched?atop an unmanned Atlas 5 rocket a week late due to technical glitches and foul weather from Tropical Storm Isaac. But when the countdown clock ran out at?4:05 a.m. EDT (0805 GMT) today, the booster roared into space from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in a flawless liftoff.

Who knows if the fancy duds worn by Rick Fitzgerald, mission project manager from Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, played a part?

"This is my good-luck tux," Fitzgerald said of his outfit at NASA's post-launch press conference. "I wore this 10 years ago for the GRACE [Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment] mission launch, where I was the mission manager. That mission is 10 years still on orbit, so I'm hoping for the same for RBSP." [Launch Photos: NASA's Radiation Probes Blast Off]

All kidding aside, a successful launch was no guarantee.

Earlier this month, a Russian Proton rocket failed during liftoff in a launch that ultimately left two new satellites stranded in useless orbits. Last year,?NASA's?Glory satellite, intended to study Earth's climate, crashed into the ocean after its Taurus XL rocket failed to reach orbit in March 2011.?

So this morning's launch was a definite relief to the scientists who planned the $686 million?RBSP mission.

"Today, 11 years' hard work was realized by the science team as we stood together watching the rocket lift off the pad. It was the most spectacular sight," said Nicky Fox, RBSP deputy project scientist at the Applied Physics Lab. "They're now at home in the Van Allen belts where they belong, and we've all actually now finally breathed out now that the four solar panels are out on both of them."

Scientists will take any advantage they can get to help their missions go off without a hitch.

For example, flight controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California wouldn't dream of carrying out a crucial mission phase without eating peanuts for good luck. The traditional nuts were passed around just before the agency's new Mars rover Curiosity rover landed on the Red Planet's surface on Aug. 5, for instance.

According to JPL lore, six Ranger moon missions in the 1960s failed to achieve their goals until one mission manager brought a jar of peanuts to his shift managing Ranger 7, which finally succeeded in 1964.?

Rapper Beanie Sigel arrested for drug, gun possession: report

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel was arrested on Wednesday on drug and gun possession charges, celebrity website TMZ.com reported, days before he was headed to prison for tax evasion.

The rapper, whose real name is Dwight Grant, was arrested during a traffic stop during which police found prescription pills, marijuana, a gun and cash in his car, TMZ.com said.

Sigel, 38, best known for his collaborations with rapper Jay-Z and R&B artist R. Kelly, was sentenced to prison last month after owing more than $728,000 in back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, Philadelphia's local Fox affiliate said.

A judge ordered Sigel to pay all taxes, penalties and interest, which officials said he failed to do. The rapper was due to report to prison on September 12.

Representatives for Sigel and the Philadelphia police could not be reached for comment.

Arizona is one of the few to still be enforce immigration laws | The ...

by THEUNHIVEDMIND, theunhivedmind.com
October 7th 2011

I am somewhat conflicted about the tactics being used by Arpaio as of late but with the extreme amount of violence coming from the Mexican cartels and illegal immigrants as well as the fact that these people know very well what they are doing is illegal. I have no problem with legal immigration. Due to recent actions by Barack Obama in regards to immigration, Arizona might be giving the anti-immigrant attacks a rest in its legislature, but out on the streets not much has changed. On Tuesday Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced the launch of ?Operation Desert Sky,? an airborne version of his controversial crime sweeps. This time he wants to send 30 pilots into the air with M-16s and a .50-caliber machine gun so they can intercept people trying to illegally cross the border.

?We?re going to use our automatic weapons if we have to, and I?m tired of my deputies having to chase these people and I?m sure the air posse will be able to spot these guys running as they do constantly from us,? Arpaio told Phoenix?s KSAZ.

Background:
Mexico on Tuesday asked a federal court in Arizona to declare the state?s new immigration law unconstitutional, arguing that the country?s own interests and its citizens? rights are at stake. Lawyers for Mexico on Tuesday submitted a legal brief in support of one of five lawsuits challenging the law. The law will take effect July 29 unless implementation is blocked by a court. The law generally requires police investigating another incident or crime to ask people about their immigration status if there?s a ?reasonable suspicion? they?re in the country illegally. It also makes being in Arizona illegally a misdemeanor, and it prohibits seeking day-labor work along the state?s streets.

Arizona?s policy, which President Felipe Calderon derided during a recent U.S. trip as ?discriminatory,? states police can?t randomly stop people and demand papers, and the law prohibits racial profiling. Mexican law, however, requires law enforcement officials ?to demand that foreigners prove their legal presence in the country before attending to any issues.?

Outsource office work, increase productivity!

Your time is your money.

If you?re like many businesses these days, you?re probably up to your eyeballs in work with a small staff. Your time is limited and you don?t have the time or resources to waste on tasks that can be outsourced.

That?s where I come in.

Virtual assistants are a godsend to business owners these days. We can work around the clock remotely on office tasks that you?d otherwise have to have someone in person to tackle. This increases your business productivity tenfold, which frees you up to handle more important tasks.

Time is Money - ProductivityAre you feeling a bit overwhelmed with the work piling up on your desk? It?s no problem at all for me, because I?ve been doing this full time online since 1998 and can take away some of your burden. Not only will I be able to take away stress, we?d be working together in an independent contractor capacity, so there?s no need to worry yourself with full-time salary, benefits, health insurance or costly training sessions.

Virtual office assistants are often more skilled than typical assistants also. For instance, many are well-versed in WordPress design, SEO practices, desktop publishing, graphics and more and can do it faster and more efficiently. This means you have a greater variety of work that can be passed along.

As time goes on, we?re becoming an increasingly digital society. People are conducting more business than ever online and with cell phone and tablet apps. When?s the last time you went to the bank? I?ll bet that you conducted business via ATM or online rather than spending time speaking with a teller and filling out forms. The internet has afforded us the convenience of streamlining our typical life practices to free up time for other activities.

Hiring a virtual assistant is no different. You?re hiring an independent contractor that likely earns a full-time living from home and whom you?ll likely never meet in person! While this is the case, this person completes just as much work, if not more than a traditional office assistant would.

Business productivity is not something that should be compromised. Every minute wasted is a potential dollar squandered. In order to keep up with the competition and your own standards, increasing productivity is a must. The world and business climate are rapidly changing, so the idea of hiring a virtual assistant will likely become the norm sooner than later. Outsourcing projects/tasks?has always been a business practice, this is just the new format.

Think of a virtual assistant as a value-added asset. Contact Office To-Go today so you can focus on your clients, your strengths and building your business.

Republicans launch convention assault on Obama

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Republicans launched a sharp assault on President Barack Obama's economic record on the first full day of their convention on Tuesday and praised Mitt Romney as a leader who could rein in big government and kick-start a stagnant economy.

After a storm threat delayed the gathering one day, Republicans formally nominated Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, to challenge Obama for the White House in a November 6 election that polls show is tight.

Republicans repeatedly accused Obama of being hostile to small business owners, burying them under high taxes and excessive regulations that stunted job growth. His signature healthcare overhaul, they said, was big government run amok.

"It's time to end this era of absentee leadership in the Oval Office and send real leaders to the White House. America needs Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and we need them right now," said Chris Christie, the combative New Jersey governor who delivered the convention's keynote address.

"Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear to put us back on the path to growth and create good-paying private sector jobs again in America," he said.

Republicans are using the convention to make the case for booting Obama from office while presenting a softer side of Romney, who has struggled to overcome a "likability gap" with the president and refute critics who paint him as a job-killing, out-of-touch former private equity executive.

Obama, campaigning in Iowa and Colorado, dismissed the Republican attacks and told a rally in Ames, Iowa, that the agenda his political foes were rolling out in Tampa made for a "pretty entertaining show."

He also accused Republicans of stretching the truth in a multi-million-dollar ad effort to get him out of the White House.

"They'll just make stuff up if they have to. They're doing it already," he said at an event in Fort Collins, Colorado. "Sometimes -- how do I put this nicely? -- they will just fib."

Polls show Romney trails Obama badly with women, and the convention featured a series of women speakers capped by Romney's wife, Ann. She said her husband had attacked every challenge - from reviving the struggling Salt Lake City Olympics to helping her battle multiple sclerosis and breast cancer.

"At every turn in his life, this man I met at a high school dance has helped lift up others," Ann Romney told the convention. At one point she shouted to fans: "I love you, women."

"A storybook marriage? Nope, not at all. What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage," she said in a speech timed to air during the one hour of prime-time coverage by U.S. broadcast television networks. "You can trust Mitt."

The former Massachusetts governor, who flew to Tampa earlier in the day, came onstage and gave his wife a kiss after her speech, getting a rousing reception from delegates.

But even as Republicans tried to show a united front against Obama, it was clear the bitter party divisions evident in the long and bruising presidential primary battle have not been resolved.

'DISENFRANCHISED'

Supporters of libertarian congressman Ron Paul of Texas and other conservative activists briefly disrupted the opening session, booing a decision to unseat Paul delegates from Maine and institute rules changes they believe will weaken their power in the next election cycle.

The rules changes, approved by the convention on a voice vote, will bind delegates to the results of a statewide vote and reduce the role of smaller state-level conventions where Paul had success.

Opponents of the move said Romney's operatives and the party's establishment were trying to freeze them out. Some noted that during the state-by-state roll call of delegates to count votes for the nomination, only Romney's vote totals were announced from the podium.

"We were disenfranchised by our party. We won't participate with this chaos," said Russell Montgomery, 52, of St. George, Maine. "We won't legitimize this fiasco. This is as bad as the other party - the corruption."

Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, Romney's chief rival in the primaries and a favorite of social conservatives who have had trouble warming to the former Massachusetts governor, addressed the convention but mentioned Romney by name only three times.

"Under President Obama, the dream of freedom and opportunity has become a nightmare of dependency with almost half of America receiving some government benefit," Santorum said.

Republicans painted Obama as a force for expanding government and said his policies had failed to bring down high unemployment or control budget deficits and federal debt.

The theme for the night, "We Built It," was a reference to Obama's "you didn't build that" comment in July that Republicans have used as an attack line against him. The comment referred to the government help that business owners receive.

"We can do better. We can do a lot better. It starts with throwing out the politician who doesn't get it, and electing a new president who does," House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said.

Republicans hope the convention will not be overshadowed by Hurricane Isaac, which hit the Louisiana coast not far from New Orleans on Tuesday night, just before the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's deadly strike on the city. They also worry about being seen celebrating Romney's nomination while swathes of the Gulf Coast are under storm threat.

While Tampa was spared the brunt of Isaac, a destructive landfall in Louisiana could create uncomfortable split-screen television images of the convention juxtaposed with the hurricane.

The Republicans used the first night to highlight some of their rising stars. Christie's speech, aimed at firing up the party's conservative base, offered plenty of lessons he learned as a Republican governor in Democratic New Jersey who has become known for his in-your-face style.

"I know this simple truth and I'm not afraid to say it: our ideas are right for America and their ideas have failed America," Christie said. "We win when we make it about what needs to be done; we lose when we play along with their game of scaring and dividing."

Delegates said Christie's speech set the right tone for the gathering, which concludes on Thursday with Romney's nationally televised acceptance speech.

"It was powerful. The message was on target, reducing the deficit, reducing unemployment," said David Rusate, from Southbury, Connecticut, said of Christie. "He's a real people's man."

Artur Davis, a black former Democratic congressman from Alabama who switched to a Republican, said he had been fooled by Obama's promises in 2008.

"But dreams meet daybreak: the jobless know what I mean, so do the families who wonder how this administration could wreck a recovery for three years and counting," Davis said.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? His convention speech finished, Republican Mitt Romney planned to outline a "clear vision of a Romney presidency" in an address that will also refer to the storm bearing down on the Gulf Coast.

Romney strategist Stuart Stevens told reporters Tuesday that Romney has largely completed work on his convention speech after months of preparation. Stevens said he and Romney haven't discussed whether to shorten, change or potentially move the speech from its planned delivery on Thursday.

Stevens says it will be about "why he wants to be president and what his presidency would look like."

Romney and his wife, Ann, arrived in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday morning.

Tropical Storm Isaac delayed Romney's convention by a day and now threatens Louisiana and Alabama as Republicans are set to celebrate Romney's nomination.

Share gains stall as investors await central bank action

LONDON (Reuters) - Gains in world share markets stalled on Monday after an August rally as investors await the next moves from major central banks to tackle the euro zone crisis and boost slowing global growth.

However, U.S. stock index futures pointed to a rise on Wall Street, with Apple likely to hit a new high after the iPhone maker won a court battle over patents with South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

Worries about the state of the global economy and how soon policymakers will respond were centre stage after a survey of around 7,000 German firms showed Europe's fiscal crisis and a slowdown in China were taking a toll on the region's biggest economy.

"The euro crisis is gnawing away at German growth," said Klaus Wohlrabe, an economist for the Ifo Institute, which compiled the survey that found a majority of firms rated their export prospects as "negative".

"It looks as if the German economy will, at best, be treading water in the coming months," Carsten Brzeski, senior economist at ING said.

The euro edged up 0.1 percent to $1.2520 after the Ifo survey was released but was holding below a peak of $1.2590 set last Thursday.

A market holiday in London thinned some stock trading. MSCI's world equity index was steady at around 324.27 points by Europe's midsession following five weeks of gains on expectations that major central banks would soon act to tackle the slowing global economy.

This view got a boost on Monday from Chicago Federal Reserve Bank President Charles Evans who said, in remarks prepared for delivery in Hong Kong, that the Fed should start a new round of monetary stimulus immediately, buying bonds for as long as it takes to produce a steady decline in the jobless rate.

The euro zone's blue chip Euro STOXX 50 index index was up 0.4 percent at 2,443.91 points following the comments, reversing losses seen after the Ifo survey.

TIGHT RANGES SEEN

However, risk assets such as equities were expected to stay in a tight range this week as investors watch for clues on the next steps to tackle the euro zone's debt crisis, and wait to see what emerges from a gathering of central bankers at Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday.

European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi signalled earlier this month the bank may start buying government debt to reduce crippling Spanish and Italian borrowing costs, comments that fuelled a broad-based upturn in sentiment on global markets.

However, over the weekend German Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann likened the ECB's bond-buying plans to a dangerous drug, pointing to growing unease over the policy.

Markets have also been unsettled by rising talk of a Greek exit from the euro zone which has bubbled up again in recent days.

With the ECB's next policy meeting not until September 6, attention is now on Friday's central bankers' meeting, and a speech that day by U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

Talk of a more accommodative monetary stance from the Fed has grown since data showed the United States is struggling due to the euro zone crisis and a slowing Chinese economy.

The speculation has helped the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares rise by about 7 percent in August, while the S&P 500 index is up around 2.3 percent.

On Monday, gold was at its highest levels since mid-April, at around $1,676.45 an ounce, due to the strength of the view that a further monetary easing from the Fed is imminent.

Oil has also risen sharply, with Brent climbing above $115 per barrel on Monday, although it was also given a lift from supply concerns as Tropical Storm Isaac threatened to interrupt most U.S. offshore oil production in the Gulf of Mexico.

Parents, need advice.

First, I don't think your soon-to-be husband has any say in this. Step-parents really have to know that the parent is the one who doles out punishment and makes the final decisions for thier children. Step-parents are important and they are free to give their input to the parent but then they have to step back and let the parent decide the best course of action. He/She may not always agree with the parent, but they should support him or her.

I do think your child has an issue and probably needs to see a counselor. I know plenty of children who are afraid to sleep alone, but 11 is a little old for it. For his sake, I hope you can get to the bottom of his fears. I wish your husband were equally concerned about his emotional well-being as his odd behavior. He's a child... I doubt he'll sleep with his brother when he's 16. He may just be going through a difficult thing - or got really afraid of a horror movie. I couldn't sleep for days after I saw Freddy Kruger - I was 19 and if I could have slept with my mommy, I would have!

Best of luck to you and your family.

Brother HL-6180DW

Although you wouldn't guess it from the model number, the Brother HL-6180DW is best understood as a heavier-duty version of the Editors' Choice Brother HL-5450DN that I recently reviewed. It adds Wi-Fi and a few other features, but it's built around the same engine and offers essentially the same speed and output quality. The key differences are a larger paper capacity and a lower cost per page. That's enough to put the HL-6180DW in a different category than the Brother HL-5450DN, where it also qualifies as Editors' Choice.

Directly competitive with the more expensive Editors' Choice OKI B431dn , the HL-6180DW delivers a slightly slower speed but a higher paper capacity. Both printers are aimed primarily at micro and small offices, and both can serve as heavy-duty personal printers. However, the Brother printer's larger paper capacity and larger size make it a little harder to justify for personal, rather than shared, use.

Basics
The HL-6180DW's paper handling is more than adequate for most micro and small offices, with a duplexer (for printing on both sides of a page) and a 550-sheet capacity, divided into a 500-sheet drawer and 50-sheet multipurpose tray. For those offices that need more, an optional second 500-sheet drawer ($209.99 list) boosts the capacity to 1,050 sheets. If you need the higher capacity, however, you're better off getting the Brother HL-6180DWT ($400 street), which is the same printer with the second tray already included.

As you might expect from the high paper capacity, the HL-6180DW is big enough so you might not want it sitting on your desk. With the standard capacity, it measures 11.3 by 14.6 by 15.1 inches (HWD). That gives it a smaller footprint than many inkjets, but the height and boxy shape makes it feel more imposing. Add the second tray and the height goes up to 16.5 inches. Even with both trays, however, it's small enough to keep near your desk, if not on it.

Setup, Speed, and Output Quality
Setting up the HL-6180DW for printing over a network is typical for the breed, although it's worth noting that the printer also offers support for a variety of mobile printing options, including AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, and Brother's own mobile app. For my tests, I connected the printer to a wired network and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista system.

Brother HL-6180DW

Brother rates the HL-6180DW at 42 pages per minute (ppm), or 2 ppm faster than the HL-5450DN. However, on our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), the HL-6180DW was statistically tied with the HL-5450DN, at 10.7 ppm. Both were a tad slower than the B431dn, at 11.1 ppm.

Output quality for the printer is par overall, and a close match to both the HL-5450DN and the B431. Text quality is at the low end of the range where the vast majority of mono lasers fall, making it easily good enough for any business need short of serious desktop publishing applications.

Graphics output is at the high end of par for mono lasers, which also makes it good enough for any internal business need. Whether you consider it good enough for, say, PowerPoint handouts will depend largely on how critical an eye you have. Photos are also par, which makes them easily good enough for printing Web pages with photos. Here again, whether you consider them good enough for photos in a client or company newsletter or the like will depend on your level of perfectionism.

Other Issues
The HL-6180DW offers a low running cost. The claimed per page cost of 1.8 cents is the same that OKI claims for the B431dn, and 0.4 cents less than Brother claims for the HL-5450DN. Print 25,000 pages over the lifetime of the printer, in short, and you can make up the difference in initial price between the HL-5450DN and the HL-6180DW. Print more, and the HL-6180DW will be less expensive in the long run.

Clearly, if you need a smaller printer that will fit more comfortably on your desk, or your needs run more toward light- to medium-duty printing (so you won't benefit from a lower cost per page or higher paper capacity), you should be looking at the HL-5450DN. For heavier-duty printing, however, the Brother HL-6180DW easily beats the HL-5450DN on running cost and paper handling, while it matches or beats the B431dn on initial cost, running cost, and paper capacity. All of this makes it a runaway pick for Editors' Choice.

No one asked to see my birth certificate, Romney jokes

(John Moore/Getty Images)Mitt Romney made a joke about the so-called "birther" conspiracies that question whether President Barack Obama is an American citizen, telling a crowd in his home state of Michigan that no one has ever questioned his birthplace.

"No one has ever asked to see my birth certificate," Romney said at a rally in Commerce, Mich., as he campaigned alongside his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan. Referring to his wife, Ann, who is also a Michigan native, Romney said, "They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

Kevin Madden, a senior Romney adviser, downplayed the GOP candidate's comments, saying he was only making reference to the fact that he was campaigning in his home state.

"The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States," Madden said in an email to Yahoo News.

Indeed, Romney has long declined to become involved in conspiracies about Obama's birthplace, calling the debate a distraction from real issues. But he hasn't exactly condemned supporters who have continued to question whether Obama is really an American citizen. That list includes Donald Trump, a high profile Romney supporter who has helped raise cash for the presumptive Republican nominee.

Asked in May if he is "comfortable" with Trump's suggestions that Obama wasn't born in the United States, Romney got a bit irritated.

"You know, I don't agree with all the people who support me, and my guess is that they don't all agree with everything I believe in," Romney told reporters on his campaign plane. "But I need to get to 50.1 percent or more, and I'm appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people."

The Obama campaign quickly pounced on Romney's remark, accusing him of siding with extremists in his party.

"Throughout this campaign, Gov. Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them," Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said in an email to reporters. "Romney's decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America."

Romney's comment technically wasn't true. As Politico's Maggie Haberman quickly noted on Twitter, reporters asked to see copies of Romney's birth certificate during the 2008 campaign?not to see his birthplace but rather to verify his full name.

Trustees talk options on golf course

CARRIZOZO - Trustees got the ball rolling on an ambitious project to renovate and reuse the Valle del Sol Golf Course, though improvements will have to wait for funding.

Trustee Yvonne Lucero, a member of the golf course committee, presented the group's vision for a multi-use park featuring a panoply of recreational options ranging from fishing to walking paths to disc golf, she said.

"We envision the golf course as a way to build community," she said.

The best part is that the golf course itself would remain unaltered, fit to be restored "whenever the town wants to pick it back up," she said.

"We still have a putting green and we want to make it look nice," she said. "In five or 10 years if (the town) wants the golf course, you just have to reseed it and it's there."

The committee also recommended keeping holes one and four to allow local golfers the chance to play a quick game at home, rather than having to head to Ruidoso or Alto any time they want to play, she said.

"They'll just go out and come around, play a round and it won't take too much to keep it watered," she said. "That keeps a little bit of golf going."

Improvements

The first area Lucero spoke on to the council involved the course's pond, a small body of water set back from the main clubhouse that presents an opportunity to draw fishermen in the wake of Bonito Lake's damage from the Little Bear Fire.

Lucero said she and Joey Thornton, maintenance foreman for Carrizozo, had

begun speaking to New Mexico Department of Fish and Game representatives about increasing the pond's fish stocking schedule, as no fish would survive in Bonito Lake for several years.

"We advertise our lake so more people will come enjoy what we have, especially as we don't have Bonito (Lake) anymore," she said. "Until I moved here, I didn't even know we had a lake, so I'm sure a lot of people also don't know."

Lucero also suggested improvements to the course's soccer field, which would need to be smoothed out for play. She also suggested adding bleachers or benches to provide a viewing area for visitors.

The tennis and basketball courts also could use some work, she added.

The courts had been resurfaced and were "OK to play," but improvements, and a second goal on the basketball court, would not go amiss, she said.

The 2.5 miles of cart path along the golf course could easily be transformed into a walking or jogging path with the addition of benches and signs, she said.

Coming to the more modern and less-known portion of the committee's plan, Lucero suggested that Carrizozo take the opportunity to install the state's largest disc golf course on the 70 unused acres of golf course.

"Disc golf is really growing, it's in every county, almost, of the world," she said. "There's a bunch of them here in New Mexico. We could easily have the largest disc golf course in the state.

Lucero added that the largest course in the state had 27 holes, and suggested Carrizozo look to put in 36. She estimated the cost of installing the baskets at about $8,000 for the cheaper baskets and $16,000 for higher quality disc catchers. Tee boxes would be edged-in dirt pads, rather than cement, so as not to permanently alter the golf course, she said.

"Anyone can play, there's no expensive equipment needed to play, and you can play in all weather types," she said. "They play in snow, they play in rain, they play in the wind - the more obstacles the better."

But the driving force behind these initiatives would be sporting tournaments to draw people into town, she said.

"By next summer, we'd like to be able to hire a part-time person to schedule events on the facilities over there," she said. "We believe the tournaments, once started, will produce enough money to pay this salary."

Fishing, basketball, horseshoe tournaments and "even tennis matches" could be scheduled throughout the year. Lucero suggested the town look into working with Eastern New Mexico University-Ruidoso to bring a college student in a work-study position, which would cost Carrizozo Works Inc. about $200 per month, as 75 percent of their wages are paid by the work-study program, she said.

Carrizozo Works Inc. is a non-profit group that promotes the town for tourism and new residents.

Lucero said benches, $300 to $600 each, would be a good place to start on the walking path, at least until more funding comes in for the remaining projects.

"We'll try to start small with the money we have first," she said.

She added that the group had submitted a grant application to the Hubbard Foundation to help fund the project and was looking at recruiting sponsors for benches and disc golf holes, and permanent advertising for the cost of construction.

Trustee Jamie Gieb said the town should not wait until a grant came in, at least not for everything.

"We've got to start somewhere," she said. "If we wait months to get grants and don't do anything, it'll go to rot."

Trustees moved to continue looking into funding options for the course, though nothing was decided for certain at the meeting.

Town Clerk Leann Weibrecht added that she and Lucero were working on organizing a community contest to decide the new name for the course.

Other business

  • Trustees also moved to approve the closing of 12th Street on Oct. 28 for a cinematic event. Marc Cohen, a new resident and art gallery owner requested the street be closed for the early part of the day to film a flash mob event that also would serve as an ad for the town.

Cohen said the event, "'Zozo Rocks," would start out with an empty street that would gradually fill with pedestrians, dancers, motorcycles and noise before emptying back to a quiet, small-town scene.

He added that a feast would be held after the event, to which all are invited.

  • Police Chief Stephen Barnett announced that his department was expecting an increase in its grants following several productive months of work with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area grant.

Barnett said an increase of $1,500 to $1,800 was expected, but he was unsure of the specific amount. The department had reported an average of 5.2 tickets per hour, a significant increase from the statewide average of 3.8 to 4.1 tph, he said.

Officers picked up an average of about 18 extra hours of patrol time per month with the HIDTA grant. Operation DWI hours were more fickle, concentrated around statewide "blitzes," though some funds were reserved for continued patrols during non-blitz periods, he added.

He said he was proud to say that the department's Click It or Ticket program also has seen success with 100 percent of the town buckled up during the last few months. Barnett added that nine out of 10 already were buckled up when pulled over at the start of the campaign.

  • Carrizozo will spend $2,000 per year to ensure the town always will have access to its information.

The service is provided by Tyler Technologies of Lubbock, Texas, and would allow the town to back up its data every night, preserving it in event of a disaster or computer complication, Weibrecht said.

"If our system goes down, all we need to do is get a computer, hook it up and download," she said. "We'll get all the software, we'll get everything, we won't lose anything."

How to become an accountant | Alpha Epsilon Phi

If someone tells you that accounting is all about communication, you would think that probably nobody knows anything about the profession. Accounting policies are appropriate she assistants, perform complex calculations in minutes or even seconds. You would think that is how math intersect with communication?

Study identifies human melanoma stem cells

    Friday, August 24, 2012

Cancer stem cells are defined by three abilities: differentiation, self-renewal and their ability to seed a tumor. These stem cells resist chemotherapy and many researchers posit their role in relapse. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study recently published in the journal Stem Cells, shows that melanoma cells with these abilities are marked by the enzyme ALDH, and imagines new therapies to target high-ALDH cells, potentially weeding the body of these most dangerous cancer creators.

"We've seen ALDH as a stem cell marker in other cancer types, but not in melanoma, and until now its function has been largely unknown," says the paper's senior author, Mayumi Fujita, MD, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and associate professor in the Department of Dermatology at the CU School of Medicine.

Fujita's group transplanted ALDH+ and ALDH- melanoma cells into animal models, showing the ALDH+ cells were much more powerfully tumorigenic. In the same ALDH+ cells, the group then silenced the gene that creates this protein, finding that with ALDH knocked down, melanoma cells died in cultures and lost their ability to form tumors in animal models. In cell cultures, silencing this ALDH gene also sensitized melanoma cells to existing chemotherapies. When the group explored human tumor samples, they found distinct subpopulations of these ALDH+ cells, which made up about 0.1-0.2 percent of patients' primary tumors. In samples of metastatic melanoma ? the most aggressive form of the disease ? the percentage of ALDH+ cells was greater, even over 10 percent in some tumors, further implying the powerful danger of these cells.

"In these same ALDH+ cells, we find the markers of stem cells are upregulated and those of cell differentiation are downregulated. In addition to these clues, ALDH+ cells generate the heterogeneous cell types seen in the original tumor," says Fujita, meaning that in addition to self-renewal and tumorigenesis, ALDH+ cells fulfill the third criteria for a cancer stem cell: the ability to differentiate.

The study also shows how the ALDH gene and its protein act to create a cell's stem-like properties.

"One way ALDH makes a cancer stem cell is through the retinoic acid signaling pathway," Fujita says. The protein ALDH leads to the overproduction of retinoic acid, which in turn binds to a cell's nuclear receptors and influences the expression of many of the cell's genes ? for example, genes involved in regulating cell survival, repair, and proliferation, all of which combine to confer chemoresistance. Target cells with high ALDH and you target all the downstream effects, including the retinoic acid signaling pathway.

"Our hope is that we can intervene in this signaling, either at the level of ALDH or elsewhere in the pathway, especially to re-sensitize cells to chemotherapy. Using a new drug to take away a melanoma stem cell's chemoresistance could boost the effectiveness of existing drugs," Fujita says.

Moroccan police break up protest of royal tribute

RABAT, Morocco (AP) ? Moroccan police have violently broken up a protest demanding more political freedoms and denouncing an annual ceremony honoring the king.

Dozens of activists gathered in front of parliament in the capital, Rabat, on Wednesday.

Police blocked the unauthorized gathering, beating protesters with batons. An Associated Press reporter saw people in the crowd, including another journalist, come under blows.

Officials from around the country came to Rabat this week to prostrate themselves before King Mohamed VI. The elaborate, nationally televised ceremony is considered a near-sacred event in Morocco and usually meets no public resistance. But the protesters now say it's humiliating and medieval.

Moroccan youth took to the streets last year amid uprisings around the Arab world. The king announced reforms and early elections, but activists are calling for more change.

BOSTON (August 22, 2012) A study in mice conducted by researchers at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) suggests that a woman's risk of anxiety and dysfunctional social behavior may depend on the experiences of her parents, particularly fathers, when they were young. The study, published online in Biological Psychiatry, suggests that stress caused by chronic social instability during youth contributes to epigenetic changes in sperm cells that can lead to psychiatric disorders in female offspring across multiple generations.

"The long-term effects of stress can be pernicious. We first found that adolescent mice exposed to chronic social instability, where the cage composition of mice is constantly changing, exhibited anxious behavior and poor social interactions through adulthood. These changes were especially prominent in female mice," said first author Lorena Saavedra-Rodrguez, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in the Larry Feig laboratory at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM).

The researchers then studied the offspring of these previously-stressed mice and observed that again female, but not male, offspring exhibited elevated anxiety and poor social interactions. Notably, even though the stressed males did not express any of these altered behaviors, they passed on these behaviors to their female offspring after being mated to non-stressed females. Moreover, the male offspring passed on these behaviors to yet another generation of female offspring.

"We are presently searching for biochemical changes in the sperm of stressed fathers that could account for this newly appreciated form of inheritance" said senior author Larry A. Feig, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry at Tufts University School of Medicine and member of the biochemistry and neuroscience program faculties at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University. "Hopefully, this work will stimulate efforts to determine whether similar phenomena occur in humans."

Different Aspects Of Mobile Computing And Technology ?

In mobile computing world, migration is important for survival. Mobility originated from the desire to move either toward resources or away from scarcity. Mobile computing is about both physical and logical computing entities that move all system data from one source location to another destination.Mobile computing provides some physical entities that are computers which change locations as and when required. Here, logical entities are instances of a running user application or a mobile agent that automatically configures device. Therefore, mobile agents can migrate any where over internet.Nomadic computing refers to limited migration. Migration is within a building at a pedestrian speed. Interleaved pattern of user relocation and in door connections is also refer to nomadic access. For example, in the same vein, users carrying laptop with DIAL UP modems are engaged in nomadic computing. If the user needs access to a network such as the internet on the go, they must resort to slow wireless WAN systems primarily intended for telephone use. Higher ergo baby sale speed wirelesses LANs are only available in specific sites. However, there are some constraints, technical and some other limitations while doing mobile computing. For Example, when working mobile, one is dependent on public networks, requiring careful use of VPNs. Therefore, there are some leaks to security standards in this case. Also, there is some power consumption in the process. Since the grid cannot be used, mobile computers must rely entirely on battery power. Combined with compact size, this ergo baby carrier canada means unusually expensive batteries must be used. Hence battery power should be properly maintained for better utilization of this technology.Sometime, weather and terrain problems as well as distance limited connection exist with some technologies. Reception in tunnels and some buildings is poor. Potential health damage from cellular radio frequency emission is not known yet. However, more car accidents are related to drivers who were talking through a mobile device. Also, cell phones may interfere with sensitive medical devices. We can say that human interface has been increased with mobile devices. So, there can be some health problem regarding to electromagnetic interferences. Yet these problems are not proven. But precaution is the first step to cure. As HMDs are still uncommon, screens are often too small. Keyboards are impractical, ergo baby carrier especially one handed, and alternate methods such as speech or handwriting recognition require training.Mobile computing is a generic term describing ones ability to use technology while moving, as opposed to portable computers. Distributed computing as we know, works on static wired network. Hence it is more secured as compared to any other computing mechanisms here before.
